Summary
Vile Bastards
by C.M. Stunich
Sharing my words thus far has only put us both in danger. It’s better to just call the whole thing off before somebody gets hurt.
Or maybe, just maybe, you are the one who keeps spilling my secrets. That it? You sold me out? I knew it; I knew I couldn’t trust you.
I can’t even trust my fuckboys, now can I? Sending me a severed p*nis as a gift doesn’t excuse their poor behavior.
Somebody died in that river. Death changed things. I wish it didn’t, but I can’t deny it. After that, nothing was going to be the same. I started questioning everything and everyone. Like, where was Ash when the night first started to go to hell?
Why was there a single gunshot followed by so much eerie quiet? Come to find out later that Widow was supposed to keep me at the track, so why didn’t he?
And since when did Alexei have a secret phone number to contact the mob? He offered up his virginity like a sacrifice and then marched me straight into the pits of hell.
Why didn’t Bohnes just tell me the plan ahead of time? If I’d known, I could’ve made different choices. Maybe I wouldn’t have ended up driving an orange Lamborghini into a river?
The Queen of Prescott High has a tarnished crown.
I trusted you—maybe I still do—but somebody betrayed me. Somebody lied.
If it was you, I suggest you run; I don’t deal well with snitches.
Remember what they get? Nice and easy ‘cause it rhymes: stitches.
Whoever ratted me out better have a fast, fuckin’ car.
Because it’s not just my boys you should be afraid of: it’s me.

Vile Bastards by C.M. Stunich is a gripping exploration of betrayal, trust, and the chaotic aftermath of a life-altering event. Set against the backdrop of high school drama intertwined with elements of crime and dark humor, the novel presents a narrative that is both engaging and thought-provoking. The blurb sets the stage for a story that is rife with tension, secrets, and the ever-present threat of violence, drawing readers into a world where nothing is as it seems and everyone has something to hide.
The protagonist, a fierce and unapologetic young woman, navigates the treacherous waters of her social circle, which is populated by a cast of characters that are as complex as they are flawed. The narrative begins with a sense of foreboding, as the protagonist grapples with the implications of a recent death that has shaken her world. This event serves as a catalyst for the unraveling of relationships and the questioning of loyalties, setting the tone for the rest of the book.
One of the most striking aspects of Vile Bastards is its exploration of trust and betrayal. The protagonist's relationships with her "fuckboys" and friends are put to the test as she confronts the reality that those closest to her may not have her best interests at heart. Stunich skillfully weaves a narrative that keeps readers guessing about who can be trusted and who is hiding their true intentions. The protagonist's internal struggle with her feelings of betrayal is palpable, making her journey relatable and emotionally resonant.
The character development in this novel is particularly noteworthy. The protagonist is not a one-dimensional figure; she is layered and multifaceted, exhibiting strength and vulnerability in equal measure. Her interactions with the other characters, such as Ash, Widow, Alexei, and Bohnes, reveal the complexities of teenage relationships and the often murky waters of loyalty and friendship. Each character is given depth, with their own motivations and secrets that contribute to the overarching narrative. Stunich's ability to create such rich characters adds a level of authenticity to the story, making the stakes feel real and immediate.
Stunich's writing style is both engaging and accessible, with a sharp wit that permeates the dialogue. The humor interspersed throughout the narrative serves as a counterbalance to the darker themes, providing moments of levity that enhance the reading experience. The author’s use of vivid imagery and descriptive language immerses readers in the world of Prescott High, making it easy to visualize the settings and feel the emotions of the characters. The pacing of the story is well-executed, with tension building steadily as the plot unfolds, leading to a climax that is both satisfying and thought-provoking.
The themes of death and its consequences are central to the narrative. The protagonist's reflection on the impact of the death she witnesses forces her to confront her own choices and the fragility of life. This theme resonates deeply, as it prompts readers to consider how quickly circumstances can change and how the people we trust can become sources of pain. Stunich does not shy away from the darker aspects of life, and this willingness to explore uncomfortable truths adds a layer of depth to the story.
Moreover, the novel delves into the concept of identity and self-discovery. As the protagonist grapples with the fallout from the events surrounding her, she is forced to reevaluate who she is and what she stands for. This journey of self-discovery is relatable to anyone who has faced challenges in their own life, making the protagonist's evolution throughout the story both compelling and inspiring.
In comparison to other works in the young adult genre, Vile Bastards stands out for its unflinching portrayal of the complexities of adolescence. While many novels in this category tend to gloss over the darker aspects of teenage life, Stunich embraces them, creating a narrative that feels authentic and raw. Readers who enjoy the works of authors like Jay Asher or Courtney Summers will likely find themselves drawn to Stunich's bold storytelling and complex characters.
Overall, Vile Bastards is a captivating read that offers a unique blend of humor, drama, and suspense. C.M. Stunich has crafted a narrative that not only entertains but also challenges readers to reflect on the nature of trust, the impact of death, and the journey of self-discovery. The book's engaging characters and intricate plot make it a standout in the young adult genre, ensuring that it will resonate with readers long after they turn the final page. For those seeking a story that is both thrilling and thought-provoking, Vile Bastards is a must-read.
