Summary
The Villain
by Nana Malone
Guess who's having the craziest week EVER?
That would be me.
Sunday: I get dumped by my boyfriend—right before a couple's bungee jump.
Monday: My little sister informs me that she’s invited our evil, estranged mom to the wedding I’ve spent months helping her plan.
Wednesday: In an effort to escape Massimo Igno, this creepy friend of my future brother-in-law, I somehow end up making out with a tall, dark stranger who looks like Superman’s twin.
Thursday: Tall-dark-and Superman’s-Twin turns out to be my new high-profile client, and my now totally off-limits thinks-he’s-the-boss-of-me client is demanding I drop everything to come with him to Rome. Seriously, did I hunt baby polar bears in a past life or something? What did I do to deserve this? Of course, with my sister’s wedding to plan, I tell him no.
Friday: As it turns out, no isn’t an option. My sexy new “client” is actually a ruthless, dangerous criminal. Apparently, he and the creepy guy I was trying to dodge are arch-enemies. He’s been watching me for weeks, and he wants to use me to get to Massimo.
Unfortunately, I don’t discover any of this until after he steals me from my hotel room in the dead of night and deposits me at his remote British countryside estate.
Saturday: I decide to fight like hell to escape my gorgeous British country estate prison.
Now, the question going into next week is, will I be able to get away from stupid-hot-villain a-holewhose stare makes my tummy do things it shouldn’t, considering he’s kidnapped me?
And what will he do to me if he catches me?

Nana Malone's The Villain is a whirlwind of a romantic suspense novel that takes readers on a rollercoaster ride through a week of chaos, intrigue, and unexpected romance. The book's blurb sets the stage for a story that is as unpredictable as it is engaging, and Malone delivers on this promise with a narrative that is both thrilling and emotionally resonant.
At the heart of the story is our protagonist, who finds herself in a series of unfortunate and increasingly bizarre situations. From being dumped right before a bungee jump to being embroiled in a dangerous game between two arch-enemies, her week is anything but ordinary. Malone crafts a character who is relatable in her exasperation and determination, making her a compelling figure for readers to root for.
The character development in The Villain is one of its standout features. Our protagonist is not just a passive participant in the chaos around her; she is a dynamic character who evolves as the story progresses. Her initial frustration and confusion give way to a fierce determination to take control of her situation. This transformation is handled with nuance and care, allowing readers to see her grow in strength and resolve.
Equally intriguing is the character of the "villain" himself. Malone subverts the typical villain trope by giving him depth and complexity. He is not merely a one-dimensional antagonist; instead, he is a multifaceted character with motivations that are gradually revealed throughout the story. This adds a layer of intrigue and keeps readers guessing about his true intentions and the nature of his relationship with the protagonist.
The themes explored in The Villain are both timeless and relevant. At its core, the novel is about empowerment and the struggle to reclaim one's agency in the face of overwhelming odds. The protagonist's journey is one of self-discovery and resilience, as she learns to navigate a world that seems determined to undermine her. This theme is underscored by the novel's exploration of trust and betrayal, as the protagonist must decide who she can rely on in a world where alliances are constantly shifting.
Malone's writing style is engaging and accessible, with a keen eye for detail that brings the story to life. Her descriptions of the British countryside estate, where much of the action takes place, are vivid and atmospheric, creating a sense of place that is both idyllic and foreboding. The pacing of the novel is brisk, with each chapter building on the tension and suspense of the last. This makes for a page-turner that is difficult to put down.
In terms of its impact, The Villain is a novel that stays with you long after you've turned the final page. It is a story that challenges readers to think about the nature of villainy and heroism, and the ways in which these roles can be fluid and interchangeable. Malone's ability to blend romance and suspense in a way that feels fresh and exciting is a testament to her skill as a storyteller.
For readers who enjoy romantic suspense, The Villain is a must-read. It shares similarities with other works in the genre, such as the novels of Sandra Brown and Nora Roberts, but Malone's unique voice and perspective set it apart. Her ability to create complex characters and weave them into a narrative that is both thrilling and emotionally satisfying is what makes The Villain a standout in its field.
In conclusion, Nana Malone's The Villain is a captivating and thought-provoking novel that offers a fresh take on the romantic suspense genre. With its well-drawn characters, engaging plot, and exploration of themes such as empowerment and trust, it is a book that will appeal to a wide range of readers. Whether you're a fan of romance, suspense, or simply a well-told story, The Villain is a book that deserves a place on your reading list.
