The Mercenary's Guide to Mishaps and Romance
by Alice Winters
Ellis
Why is it that the first attractive man to look my way mistakes me for a bad guy, stuffs me in the trunk of his car, and ships me off to an island where I’m positive the only thing waiting for me is my own murder?
I mean… yeah, Tavish is charismatic and fun, but did I mention the whole trunk thing? Oh, maybe I forgot to mention his peculiar group of friends who keep promising to “help” me, but why are they running around with masks and weapons while praising fences?
Tavish and his friends are actually the bad guys, aren’t they?
If I (somehow) look past all of that… Tavish really does seem like a nice guy. He’s caring, funny, and willing to risk his life to protect me. It’s become quite clear that if I’m going to get out of this alive, I’m not going to be able to do it without him.
Tavish
So maybe I mixed things up a wee bit and took Ellis on a tiny road trip that he might not have been privy to. Ellis doesn’t seem to overly mind. I mean, yeah, maybe he tried blinding me with aerosol spray… or maybe I was just blinded by his handsome smile.
The problem is that Ellis is in danger, but he knows nothing about this world he’s been thrown into. He’s sweet, kind, and has the biggest heart of anyone I’ve ever met. And I’m prepared to protect it at all costs.

Alice Winters' The Mercenary's Guide to Mishaps and Romance is a delightful romp through a world of unexpected adventure, humor, and heartwarming romance. This book is a refreshing take on the romantic comedy genre, blending elements of action and suspense with a quirky love story that keeps readers engaged from start to finish.
The story kicks off with a bang as we meet Ellis, an endearing protagonist who finds himself in a rather precarious situation. Mistaken for a villain, Ellis is unceremoniously stuffed into the trunk of a car by Tavish, a charismatic mercenary with a penchant for mischief. This unlikely beginning sets the tone for a narrative filled with unexpected twists and turns, as Ellis is whisked away to an island where danger lurks around every corner.
One of the standout aspects of this novel is its character development. Ellis is portrayed as a relatable and lovable character, whose innocence and naivety are both his strengths and weaknesses. His journey from a bewildered captive to a confident partner in crime is both humorous and touching. Ellis' internal monologue is peppered with witty observations and self-deprecating humor, making him an instantly likable protagonist.
Tavish, on the other hand, is a complex character who initially appears to be the quintessential bad boy. However, as the story unfolds, we see layers of his personality that reveal a caring and protective nature. His interactions with Ellis are filled with banter and chemistry, creating a dynamic that is both entertaining and heartwarming. Tavish's willingness to risk his life for Ellis adds depth to his character, showcasing his growth and the genuine connection he forms with Ellis.
The supporting cast of characters adds an extra layer of intrigue and humor to the story. Tavish's peculiar group of friends, who are often seen running around with masks and weapons, provide comic relief while also contributing to the plot's suspenseful elements. Their antics and unique personalities make them memorable additions to the narrative, and their loyalty to Tavish and Ellis is both endearing and amusing.
Winters' writing style is engaging and witty, with a perfect balance of humor and emotion. The dialogue is sharp and clever, capturing the essence of each character and their relationships. The pacing of the story is well-executed, with moments of tension and action seamlessly interwoven with scenes of romance and comedy. The island setting adds an element of mystery and adventure, enhancing the overall atmosphere of the book.
Themes of trust, loyalty, and love are central to the narrative, as Ellis and Tavish navigate the challenges of their unconventional relationship. The story explores the idea of finding love in unexpected places and the importance of looking beyond first impressions. Ellis and Tavish's journey is a testament to the power of vulnerability and the strength that comes from opening one's heart to another.
In comparison to other romantic comedies, The Mercenary's Guide to Mishaps and Romance stands out for its unique blend of genres. While it shares similarities with works by authors like T.J. Klune and Casey McQuiston, Winters' novel offers a fresh perspective with its action-packed plot and unconventional romance. The book's ability to balance humor with heartfelt moments makes it a standout in the genre.
Overall, The Mercenary's Guide to Mishaps and Romance is a thoroughly enjoyable read that will appeal to fans of romantic comedies and action-adventure stories alike. Alice Winters has crafted a tale that is both entertaining and emotionally resonant, with characters that linger in the reader's mind long after the final page. Whether you're in the mood for laughter, love, or a little bit of both, this book is sure to deliver.
