The Maverick of the Mountain
by Tessa Klein
He’s big. He’s bearded.
AND HE HAS A CHAINSAW!?
You Only Live Once…
My temporary tattoo feels more like a prescient warning than a gentle reminder after I nearly careen off an old mountain road during the worst storm I’ve ever encountered.
I should’ve stayed in town. I should’ve thrown out the hand-drawn map the local gave me. And I should’ve never followed the winding, muddy road to the cabin in the woods.
This is a horror movie waiting to happen. Scratch that. IT IS HAPPENING!
After being attacked by a rabid raccoon in the not-so-abandoned cabin, I race outside to find a massive, chainsaw-wielding mountain man with his eyes set on me.
Nope. Nope, nope, nope!
I take off into the woods, risking bears, wolves, and mountain lions, but unfortunately, I don’t make it far. I slip, slide, and face plant into a pile of mud, my back against a downed tree as I wait for my inevitable demise.
Fortunately, something else comes. Maverick Wood. Thick beard. Thicker limbs. Thick… gulp.
This rugged, protective mountain man takes one look at my shivering mess of a self and decides I’m his to take care of. His to protect. His. He throws me over his shoulder and carries me back to his cabin to tend to my wounds. My needs. My everything.
His possessive gaze makes me forget I’m supposed to leave. Makes me ignore the red flag that is his pet raccoon named Hank. Because this rugged mountain man looks at me like I’m not just another tourist passing through town. He’s looking at me like I’m exactly where I belong.
With him.

Tessa Klein's The Maverick of the Mountain is a delightful romp through the wilderness, blending elements of romance, humor, and suspense into a narrative that is as unpredictable as the stormy weather that sets the stage for the story. The book's blurb promises a thrilling ride, and Klein delivers on that promise with a tale that is both heartwarming and exhilarating.
At the heart of the novel is the protagonist's unexpected adventure, which begins with a seemingly innocuous decision to follow a hand-drawn map to a cabin in the woods. This decision quickly spirals into a series of events that are as comical as they are terrifying. The protagonist's encounter with a rabid raccoon and a chainsaw-wielding mountain man sets the tone for a story that is as much about survival as it is about finding unexpected love in the most unlikely of places.
The character of Maverick Wood is a standout in the novel. He is the quintessential rugged mountain man, complete with a thick beard and an imposing presence. Yet, beneath his gruff exterior lies a heart of gold. Maverick's protective nature and his immediate decision to care for the protagonist add depth to his character, making him more than just a stereotypical love interest. His pet raccoon, Hank, adds a quirky touch to his persona, serving as both a red flag and a source of humor throughout the story.
The protagonist's journey is one of self-discovery and acceptance. Initially, she is portrayed as a typical tourist, out of her element and overwhelmed by the challenges she faces. However, as the story progresses, she evolves into a resilient and resourceful individual, capable of facing the dangers of the wilderness and the complexities of her emotions. Her internal conflict between the desire to leave and the growing attachment to Maverick is portrayed with nuance, adding layers to her character development.
The Maverick of the Mountain explores themes of belonging and identity, as the protagonist grapples with her place in the world and her unexpected connection to Maverick. The novel also touches on the idea of home, suggesting that it is not a physical location but rather a feeling of safety and acceptance. This theme is reinforced by Maverick's unwavering belief that the protagonist belongs with him, a sentiment that is both romantic and empowering.
Klein's writing style is engaging and accessible, with a keen sense of humor that permeates the narrative. The dialogue is sharp and witty, capturing the chemistry between the protagonist and Maverick. The pacing of the story is well-balanced, with moments of tension and suspense interspersed with scenes of tenderness and introspection. The vivid descriptions of the mountain setting add to the immersive quality of the novel, transporting readers to a world that is both beautiful and treacherous.
In comparison to other works in the romance genre, The Maverick of the Mountain stands out for its unique blend of humor and suspense. While it shares similarities with novels like Kristen Ashley's The Gamble, which also features a strong, protective male lead and a heroine out of her element, Klein's novel distinguishes itself with its playful tone and unexpected plot twists. The inclusion of a pet raccoon as a character is a particularly inventive touch, adding a layer of unpredictability to the story.
Overall, The Maverick of the Mountain is a captivating read that will appeal to fans of romance and adventure alike. Its memorable characters, engaging plot, and exploration of themes such as belonging and identity make it a standout addition to the genre. Tessa Klein has crafted a story that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, leaving readers with a sense of satisfaction and a desire for more.
For those seeking a novel that combines the thrill of the wilderness with the warmth of a budding romance, The Maverick of the Mountain is a must-read. It is a testament to the power of love and the unexpected places it can be found, reminding us that sometimes, the greatest adventures are the ones we never planned for.
