The Longing
by Hattie Jacks
One monstrous moment…and I fall for the dragon shifter…literally
Alice:
Falling through a portal to the realm of the Yeavering was not in my life plan, but neither was being chased by my aunt with a gun.
Falling straight into the arms of a dragon shifter wasn’t on the cards either…but here we are.
The Lambton Wyrm is the most dangerous, most feral of all the monsters in the Yeavering and he has decided I belong to him.
Which, as he has no idea what I am, or what to do with me, is not ideal. Neither is the curse binding him, the one which says I am his fated mate, and the only way he gets to stay alive is if he breeds with me…
As if my day could get any worse…I have to teach the Lambton Wyrm all about mating, without being accidentally eaten by the big growly grump, regardless of how desirable he might be with his chiselled good looks and abs for days…
Looks like things are about to get interesting.
Fenrother:
I did not ask for a fated mate, the Yeavering gave one to me.
And this one is my mortal enemy, a human.
She is not like me. Her anatomy is wrong and she smells…clean. But she is the key to unlocking my curse.
So I strip her of all weapons, including the strange holster on her chest and wait. Providing we share a bed, she will be mated and my curse lifted. Or at least that is what I was taught by my books. So when the human tells me it is not so, why should I believe her?
No matter how good she smells, humans have killed Wyrms for centuries. I cannot give in to the way my heart flips in my chest whenever she is near.
Until the day I discover exactly what mating is…

Hattie Jacks' The Longing is a captivating foray into the realm of fantasy romance, where the boundaries between human and mythical creatures blur in a tale of unexpected love and destiny. The novel's premise is both intriguing and imaginative, setting the stage for a story that explores themes of identity, fate, and the transformative power of love.
The narrative kicks off with a bang as Alice, the protagonist, finds herself thrust into the mystical realm of the Yeavering after a dramatic escape from her gun-wielding aunt. This sudden transition from the mundane to the magical is a hallmark of fantasy literature, and Jacks handles it with aplomb, immediately immersing the reader in a world that is both enchanting and perilous. The Yeavering is vividly described, with its own set of rules and creatures, the most formidable of which is the Lambton Wyrm, a dragon shifter who becomes central to Alice's journey.
Alice is a well-crafted character, embodying a blend of vulnerability and resilience. Her initial bewilderment at finding herself in an alien world is relatable, and her subsequent determination to navigate this new reality is commendable. Her interactions with Fenrother, the dragon shifter, are the heart of the story. Their relationship is complex, marked by mutual suspicion, cultural misunderstandings, and an undeniable attraction that neither can fully comprehend or resist.
Fenrother, or the Lambton Wyrm, is a fascinating character in his own right. As a dragon shifter cursed to find a fated mate in order to survive, he embodies the classic trope of the brooding, misunderstood hero. His initial perception of Alice as a mere human and thus an enemy adds layers to his character, as he grapples with his instincts and the teachings of his past. The evolution of his understanding of what it means to be a mate is both humorous and touching, providing a fresh take on the often formulaic shifter romance genre.
The theme of fated mates is central to the novel, and Jacks explores it with nuance. The idea that Alice and Fenrother are destined for each other, despite their differences, serves as a metaphor for overcoming prejudice and embracing the unknown. Their journey is not just about breaking a curse but also about discovering the true nature of love, which transcends physical appearances and preconceived notions.
Jacks' writing is engaging and often witty, with a keen sense of pacing that keeps the reader invested in the unfolding drama. The dialogue between Alice and Fenrother is particularly well-crafted, capturing the tension and chemistry between them. The author also does an excellent job of balancing the romantic elements with action and suspense, ensuring that the plot remains dynamic and unpredictable.
In comparison to other works in the fantasy romance genre, such as those by authors like Nalini Singh or Christine Feehan, The Longing stands out for its unique setting and the depth of its character development. While it shares common elements with these authors' works, such as the exploration of supernatural bonds and the clash of different worlds, Jacks brings her own voice and perspective to the table, making the story feel fresh and original.
One of the novel's strengths is its exploration of identity and transformation. Both Alice and Fenrother undergo significant personal growth, challenging their own beliefs and adapting to new realities. This theme is particularly resonant in today's world, where the ability to adapt and embrace change is more important than ever.
Overall, The Longing is a compelling read that will appeal to fans of fantasy and romance alike. Its blend of humor, heart, and adventure makes it a standout in the genre, and its characters are sure to linger in the reader's mind long after the final page is turned. Hattie Jacks has crafted a story that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, offering a fresh take on the timeless tale of love against all odds.
For those looking to escape into a world of magic and romance, The Longing is a journey worth taking. Its rich world-building, well-drawn characters, and engaging plot make it a must-read for anyone who enjoys a good love story with a fantastical twist.
