The Emerson Effect
by Piper James
Tequila is the devil. I’ve always known this, but God, I love margaritas. And when I make the mistake that will change my life, forever, I can honestly say…the devil made me do it.
Making beauty and fashion videos for public consumption is my life. And when I say “my life,” I mean it. Literally.
I’m an influencer on the mega-popular BingBang app, and making content is my job. My only job. So, when my views and engagement start to diminish, I worry. A lot. How will I pay my mortgage? How will I survive?
To make matters worse, the man who uses my videos for his own popular content is earning more views and his engagement is top-tier…all at my expense. And when his satirical duo of my latest video sets me off, I do what any irrational and tequila-drunk person would do––I message him, directly.
Next-morning-me panics, knowing he could screenshot that message and call me out in front of everyone on the internet, but he doesn’t do that. In fact, he promises not to. But he does post another video, toasting me with the drink I admitted I’d been drinking when I messaged him in the first place. A margarita.
And when that video goes mega-viral with hundreds of people making guesses of whom he’s toasting, he approaches me with an idea: we should have a fake BingBang relationship. Viewers would eat it up, making both of us internet famous and padding our numbers, our wallets, and our futures.
I really hate the idea of lying, but then again, how can I refuse? I need to do something, or I could lose everything.

Piper James’ The Emerson Effect is a contemporary romance novel that delves into the world of social media influencers, exploring the complexities of online personas, the pressures of maintaining relevance, and the unexpected connections that can arise in the digital age. At its core, the book is a witty and engaging exploration of identity, authenticity, and the lengths one might go to preserve their livelihood in the ever-evolving landscape of social media.
The protagonist, a beauty and fashion influencer, is a relatable character for anyone who has ever felt the pressure of maintaining an online presence. Her life revolves around creating content for the BingBang app, a fictional yet eerily familiar platform that mirrors the likes of TikTok and Instagram. The narrative begins with a humorous yet cautionary tale about the perils of tequila, setting the stage for a series of events that will challenge her both personally and professionally.
James skillfully captures the anxiety and uncertainty that come with being an influencer whose livelihood depends on views and engagement. The protagonist’s fear of dwindling numbers is palpable, and her desperation is something many in the digital age can empathize with. This is where the novel’s primary theme emerges: the struggle between authenticity and the performative nature of social media. The protagonist’s dilemma is not just about losing followers; it’s about losing a part of her identity that she has carefully curated and shared with the world.
Enter the antagonist-turned-ally, a fellow content creator who has been using her videos for his own satirical purposes. His character is initially introduced as a foil to the protagonist, someone who seemingly thrives at her expense. However, as the story unfolds, he becomes a more nuanced character, revealing layers of complexity that challenge the protagonist’s initial perceptions. Their dynamic is one of the highlights of the book, as it evolves from adversarial to collaborative, and eventually, to something more profound.
The proposal of a fake relationship to boost their online presence is a clever plot device that James uses to explore themes of deception and truth. The protagonist’s internal conflict about lying to her audience is a testament to her integrity, even as she grapples with the necessity of the ruse. This aspect of the story raises important questions about the nature of online relationships and the blurred lines between reality and performance.
James’ writing is both sharp and humorous, with a keen eye for the absurdities of internet culture. The dialogue is snappy and realistic, capturing the cadence of online interactions and the unique language of social media. The author’s ability to weave humor into the narrative without undermining the emotional stakes is commendable, making the book an enjoyable read from start to finish.
Character development is another strong suit of The Emerson Effect. The protagonist’s journey from a stressed and insecure influencer to someone who learns to navigate the complexities of her online and offline worlds is both believable and satisfying. Her growth is mirrored by the male lead, whose initial portrayal as a carefree content creator is gradually peeled back to reveal vulnerabilities and motivations that add depth to his character.
In terms of impact, The Emerson Effect offers a fresh take on the romance genre by situating it within the context of social media. It’s a timely exploration of how digital platforms shape our identities and relationships, and it resonates with anyone who has ever felt the pressure to present a curated version of themselves online. The book’s exploration of these themes is reminiscent of other contemporary works like Sally Thorne’s The Hating Game, which also delves into the complexities of modern relationships with humor and heart.
Overall, Piper James has crafted a novel that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. The Emerson Effect is a testament to the author’s understanding of the digital landscape and its impact on personal identity. It’s a story that will appeal to readers who enjoy romance with a modern twist, as well as those interested in the intricacies of social media culture. The book’s blend of humor, romance, and social commentary makes it a standout in its genre, offering readers a delightful escape into the world of influencers while prompting reflection on their own digital lives.
In conclusion, The Emerson Effect is a compelling read that captures the zeitgeist of our times. It’s a story about finding authenticity in a world that often values performance over truth, and it does so with wit, charm, and a genuine understanding of the human experience. Piper James has delivered a novel that is as engaging as it is insightful, making it a must-read for anyone navigating the complexities of love and identity in the digital age.
