The Devil on my Chest
by Lisa Oliver
“I can’t feel my wolf. I don’t know how much longer I can go on.”
Sheriff Rocky has been fighting some inner demons that seem more real than most. When he finally loses his control completely, committing a near-criminal act, it has people around him realizing he needs more help than the good folk at Arrowtown can give him.
“I’m not letting you go without a fight, you stupid wolf. Don’t you know how much I love you?”
Mal, Rocky’s closest friend, can’t imagine a life without Rocky. His journey to fight for his friend takes them to New York where a diagnosis is easy enough, but the cure for what ails Rocky could have life changing ramifications. Mal would have to claim him.
Can you save me from Mrs. Hooper? She’s got two of her boys with her and there’s probably a wooden spoon in her handbag.
Back in Arrowtown Rocky and Mal settled into life together. In a lot of ways, it’s no different to what they enjoyed before until Mal’s wolf starts pushing for Mal to tell Rocky an impossible truth. Will they ever get their happy-ever-after or will their lives come crumbling down in the back of a police cruiser?
Rocky and Mal’s story is the last book in the Arrowtown series and while it could be read as a standalone, the relationships between secondary characters and more in depth knowledge of past events would be clearer if you read the other books preceding this one.
This is an MM Fated Mates story and contains mpreg. If this is not your type of story, then thank you for reading this far and have a lovely day.

Lisa Oliver's The Devil on my Chest is a compelling addition to the Arrowtown series, offering readers a rich tapestry of emotional depth, supernatural intrigue, and the enduring power of friendship and love. As the final installment in the series, it carries the weight of concluding a beloved narrative while also standing strong as a standalone story for those new to the Arrowtown universe.
The novel centers around Sheriff Rocky, a character who is grappling with profound internal struggles. The opening line of the blurb, “I can’t feel my wolf. I don’t know how much longer I can go on,” sets the stage for a journey that is as much about self-discovery as it is about healing. Rocky's battle with his inner demons is portrayed with a raw honesty that makes his character both relatable and deeply sympathetic. His struggle is not just a personal one but also impacts the community around him, highlighting the interconnectedness of individual and communal well-being.
Mal, Rocky’s closest friend, emerges as a beacon of hope and resilience. His unwavering dedication to Rocky is a testament to the strength of their bond. The narrative takes a significant turn when Mal decides to take Rocky to New York for a diagnosis, a journey that underscores the lengths to which true friends will go to support one another. The revelation that Mal might have to claim Rocky as part of his cure introduces a fascinating dynamic that blends the supernatural with the deeply personal.
The theme of fated mates is central to the story, a common trope in the MM romance genre that Oliver handles with finesse. The concept of destiny and the idea that some connections are preordained adds a layer of inevitability to Rocky and Mal’s relationship. This is further complicated by the introduction of mpreg (male pregnancy), a narrative device that, while not universally appealing, is executed in a way that feels organic to the story’s world-building. For fans of the genre, this element will likely be a welcome addition, offering a unique twist on traditional romance narratives.
Back in Arrowtown, the story shifts to explore the nuances of Rocky and Mal’s evolving relationship. The return to their familiar environment allows for a deeper exploration of their dynamic, which is both comforting and challenging. Mal’s wolf pushing him to reveal an “impossible truth” to Rocky adds tension and suspense, keeping readers engaged as they wonder whether the pair will achieve their happy-ever-after or face insurmountable obstacles.
Oliver’s writing shines in her ability to create vivid, relatable characters whose struggles and triumphs resonate with readers. The secondary characters, while not the focus, add depth to the story, providing a sense of community and continuity for those familiar with the series. The author’s skillful weaving of past events into the narrative ensures that even new readers can appreciate the story’s richness without feeling lost.
In comparison to other works in the MM romance and supernatural genres, The Devil on my Chest stands out for its emotional depth and character-driven plot. Fans of authors like T.J. Klune, known for his heartfelt and humorous takes on similar themes, will find Oliver’s work equally engaging. The balance between romance, personal growth, and supernatural elements is handled with a deft touch, ensuring that no aspect feels overshadowed or underdeveloped.
Overall, The Devil on my Chest is a poignant exploration of love, identity, and the courage it takes to confront one’s demons. It is a fitting conclusion to the Arrowtown series, offering closure while leaving readers with a sense of hope and the belief that love can indeed conquer all. Whether you are a long-time fan of the series or a newcomer, this book promises a journey that is as heartwarming as it is thrilling.
