Sugar, Spice, and Magical Midlife
by Tara West
A pinch of desperation. A tablespoon of desire. A cup of madness. A recipe for disaster.
Mm. Do you smell that? It’s the warm, gooey cinnamon from my oven-hot rolls. I make the best baked goods in all of New Mexico, perhaps the whole world, in my so-very-humble opinion, using a secret family recipe, and a little forbidden magic. My bakery has been booming ever since I got rid of that big bag of moldy beans, aka the world’s most grotesque farting and armpit-sniffing ex-husband.
My life is finally on track. My autistic preteen son is thriving despite his unpredictable magic. My bumbling apprentice and her disappearing pygmy dragon only manage to set the place on fire a few times a month.
And then he walks into my life. A tall, tanned, virile shifter, who, after one steamy night, makes me believe in a whole new kind of magic. There’s just one problem—he’s an outlaw, accused of a crime he says he didn’t commit.
Am I stupid enough to believe him? Possibly. Am I reckless enough to follow him to the ends of the earth to prove his innocence? Definitely. Especially when the succubus he claims framed him might be the same demon who killed my parents.

Tara West's Sugar, Spice, and Magical Midlife is a delightful concoction of humor, romance, and fantasy that offers readers a whimsical escape into a world where magic and reality blend seamlessly. The book's blurb sets the stage for a story that promises both laughter and intrigue, and West delivers on that promise with a narrative that is both heartwarming and thrilling.
At the heart of the story is our protagonist, a middle-aged baker who has mastered the art of creating the most delectable baked goods in New Mexico. Her secret? A family recipe infused with a touch of forbidden magic. This unique blend of culinary skill and enchantment serves as a metaphor for the protagonist's life—one that is filled with both the mundane and the extraordinary. Her journey is one of self-discovery and empowerment, as she navigates the challenges of single parenthood, business ownership, and the complexities of a magical world.
The character development in Sugar, Spice, and Magical Midlife is one of its standout features. The protagonist is a relatable and endearing character whose struggles and triumphs resonate with readers. Her relationship with her autistic preteen son is portrayed with sensitivity and authenticity, highlighting the challenges and joys of raising a child with special needs. The son's unpredictable magic adds an additional layer of complexity to their lives, serving as both a source of tension and a catalyst for growth.
West's supporting characters are equally well-crafted, each adding depth and humor to the story. The bumbling apprentice and her disappearing pygmy dragon provide comic relief, while also serving as a reminder of the unpredictability of magic. The introduction of the tall, tanned, and virile shifter adds a romantic element to the narrative, creating a dynamic that is both steamy and suspenseful. The shifter's status as an outlaw accused of a crime he claims he didn't commit introduces a mystery that propels the plot forward, keeping readers engaged and invested in the outcome.
Themes of trust, redemption, and the power of belief are woven throughout the narrative, adding depth and resonance to the story. The protagonist's willingness to believe in the shifter's innocence, despite the risks involved, speaks to the transformative power of love and the courage required to pursue justice. This theme is further underscored by the revelation that the succubus who framed the shifter may be connected to the protagonist's own tragic past, creating a personal stake in the quest for truth.
West's writing is characterized by its wit and charm, with a narrative voice that is both engaging and accessible. Her ability to balance humor with more serious themes is a testament to her skill as a storyteller. The book's pacing is well-executed, with a plot that unfolds at a satisfying pace, allowing readers to savor the journey while maintaining a sense of momentum.
In comparison to other works in the magical realism and urban fantasy genres, Sugar, Spice, and Magical Midlife stands out for its unique blend of humor, romance, and mystery. Fans of authors like Deborah Harkness and Charlaine Harris will find much to enjoy in West's imaginative world, where magic is both a source of wonder and a tool for personal growth.
Overall, Sugar, Spice, and Magical Midlife is a delightful read that offers a perfect balance of whimsy and depth. Tara West has crafted a story that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, with characters that linger in the mind long after the final page is turned.
