Sold Blood
by Ashlynn Mills
Carlos:
The past has a way of always following you and whenever he’s involved, I never mind. Isaiah has called on me for help before, but the new favor he asks of me is one I never expected to receive. His beloved husband has been taken and he needs help tracking him down. One good quality I’ve always had was the ability to find people. I should say no and turn my head. Except the word no was never in my vocabulary when it came to the man I’ve been secretly in love with for the last ten years. Once my job is completed, will I be able to walk away this time?
Isaiah:
As much as I’ve been looking for an excuse to call on my old friend, this wasn’t it. My life has had its ups and down but I’m finally at the point where I thought I had everything. Or at least, I did until the other piece of my heart was taken away from me and every good thing in my life was threatened. There’s only ever been one other person besides Joey I could always trust, and he’s never completely left my mind or heart all the years later. As much as I hate putting another person I care about in harm’s way, I know he’s my only hope.
Joey:
One minute I’m safe in the arms of the man I love, and the next I wake up in the back of a dark van half naked. Out of all the things I feared in the past, being sold to the highest bidder wasn’t one of them but here I am and I won’t make it to any auction without a fight. I never was one to need rescuing, but Isaiah was never one to leave me fighting alone either. The man he sends is nothing I’ve expected him to be. What starts off as pretending for the sake of surviving, turns into something else. I’m not sure I can let him go once this is all over.

Ashlynn Mills' Sold Blood is a gripping tale that intertwines themes of love, loyalty, and the haunting shadows of the past. This novel delves into the complexities of human relationships, exploring how love can both bind and liberate, and how the past can shape the present in unexpected ways.
The story is told through the perspectives of three main characters: Carlos, Isaiah, and Joey. Each character brings a unique voice and perspective, enriching the narrative with depth and emotional resonance. Carlos is a character whose life has been marked by a secret, unrequited love for Isaiah. His ability to find people is not just a skill but a metaphor for his own search for belonging and acceptance. Carlos' internal struggle is palpable, and Mills does an excellent job of portraying his conflict between duty and desire. His journey is one of self-discovery, as he grapples with his feelings for Isaiah and the moral implications of his actions.
Isaiah, on the other hand, is a man caught between his past and present. His request for Carlos' help is not just a plea for assistance but a testament to the enduring bond they share. Isaiah's character is a study in contrasts; he is both strong and vulnerable, a man who has seemingly achieved everything yet finds himself on the brink of losing it all. Mills captures Isaiah's desperation and determination with finesse, making him a character that readers can empathize with and root for.
Then there is Joey, whose ordeal serves as the catalyst for the unfolding drama. Joey's character is a testament to resilience and the human spirit's capacity to fight against insurmountable odds. His experience of being kidnapped and sold is harrowing, yet it is his strength and determination that shine through. Mills crafts Joey's character with sensitivity, avoiding the pitfalls of victimhood and instead portraying him as a fighter. His interactions with Carlos add an intriguing layer to the narrative, as their relationship evolves from necessity to something more profound.
Thematically, Sold Blood explores the idea of love as both a source of strength and vulnerability. The novel examines how love can drive individuals to extraordinary lengths, pushing them to confront their deepest fears and desires. Mills also delves into the theme of trust, highlighting how it can be both a fragile and powerful force in relationships. The interplay between trust and betrayal is a recurring motif, adding tension and complexity to the narrative.
Another significant theme is the impact of the past on the present. Each character is haunted by their history, and Mills skillfully weaves these backstories into the narrative, providing context and depth to their actions and motivations. The past is not just a backdrop but an active force that shapes the characters' decisions and relationships.
In terms of character development, Mills excels in creating multi-dimensional characters who are both flawed and relatable. Carlos, Isaiah, and Joey are not mere archetypes but fully realized individuals with their own hopes, fears, and desires. Mills' ability to delve into their psyches and portray their internal conflicts is one of the novel's strengths. The characters' growth and evolution are organic, driven by the events of the story and their interactions with each other.
Comparatively, Sold Blood shares thematic similarities with other works in the romantic suspense genre, such as J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series or Suzanne Brockmann's Troubleshooters series. Like these authors, Mills combines elements of romance and suspense, creating a narrative that is both thrilling and emotionally engaging. However, Mills' focus on the intricacies of love and loyalty sets her work apart, offering a more introspective and character-driven approach.
Overall, Sold Blood is a compelling read that will appeal to fans of romantic suspense and character-driven narratives. Ashlynn Mills has crafted a story that is both heart-wrenching and hopeful, exploring the complexities of love and the enduring power of human connection. The novel's blend of suspense, romance, and emotional depth makes it a standout in its genre, leaving readers eager for more from this talented author.
In conclusion, Sold Blood is a testament to Ashlynn Mills' skill as a storyteller. Her ability to create nuanced characters and weave intricate narratives is evident throughout the novel. For readers seeking a story that is both thrilling and emotionally resonant, Sold Blood is a must-read. It is a novel that lingers in the mind long after the final page is turned, a testament to the enduring power of love and the human spirit.
