Sing with Me
by Jan Thompson
A father of two, widowed billionaire Diehl Brooks falls in love with his personal chef, but complications from his unfulfilled first marriage threatens his chance for love a second time around.
A selfless personal chef…
Skye Langston is a personal chef for residents and vacationers in the St. Simon’s Island area. When she finds out that her friend Brinley’s vacant beach house will be occupied for the summer, Skye is elated because she helped design the chef’s kitchen in that oceanfront house several years ago, and would love to cook in it again.
However, when Skye realizes who she will be cooking for, she is hesitant. She has heard a lot about Diehl, the once bad boy on the island, but they moved in different social circles. Now their worlds intersect in his beach retreat. Single again, the billionaire is available, but Skye resists wanting him.
Seeing him almost every day changes something about her view of him, but Skye tells herself she is only being kind to the widower, as the Bible asks Christians to be kind to one another.
A single-again billionaire…
A prodigal son who has wandered away from God, businessman Diehl doesn’t know how to come home. After being tragically widowed, he works himself aground at his father’s company, believing that a packed schedule would bury his grief. He leaves his two school-aged children with a nanny, and eventually agrees to let them stay with his in-laws. His own parents are in a tug-of-war to spend time with their grandchildren.
Diehl burns out at work, and is forced to take a summer sabbatical before they let him ruin the multi-billion-dollar family business. Reluctantly, he moves into his sister’s beach house on St. Simon’s Island to unwind and find himself. It has room for his two kids to stay with him, and it’s close enough to his parents’ home on Seaside Island for them to spend time with their grandparents.
In the beach retreat, his casual friendship with his sister’s personal chef quickly turns into something romantic, but his past shows up to collect yet another pound of flesh.

Jan Thompson's Sing with Me is a heartfelt exploration of love, loss, and redemption set against the picturesque backdrop of St. Simon’s Island. This contemporary romance novel delves into the complexities of human relationships, particularly focusing on the journey of two individuals who are trying to navigate the turbulent waters of their pasts to find solace and love in each other.
The story centers around Diehl Brooks, a widowed billionaire who is grappling with the emotional aftermath of his wife's death. Diehl is a character who embodies the struggle between personal grief and professional obligations. His decision to take a sabbatical at his sister’s beach house is not just a physical retreat but a symbolic journey towards healing. Thompson skillfully portrays Diehl's internal conflict, making him a relatable character for anyone who has ever felt overwhelmed by life's demands.
On the other hand, Skye Langston, the personal chef, is a beacon of warmth and resilience. Her character is a refreshing contrast to Diehl's brooding persona. Skye's passion for cooking and her dedication to her faith are central to her character development. Her initial hesitation to get involved with Diehl adds a layer of tension and intrigue to the narrative. Thompson does an excellent job of gradually peeling back the layers of Skye’s character, revealing her vulnerabilities and strengths in equal measure.
The chemistry between Diehl and Skye is palpable from their first interaction. Their relationship evolves from a casual friendship into a deep romantic connection, with Thompson capturing the nuances of their growing bond with finesse. The author’s ability to depict the slow burn of their romance is commendable, as it allows readers to become fully invested in their journey. The romantic tension is heightened by the presence of Diehl's unresolved issues from his first marriage, which serve as a formidable obstacle to their happiness.
One of the standout themes in Sing with Me is the concept of redemption and second chances. Both Diehl and Skye are characters who have been shaped by their past experiences, and their story is a testament to the power of love to heal and transform. Thompson weaves this theme throughout the narrative, creating a poignant reminder that it is never too late to find happiness and fulfillment.
Thompson's writing style is both engaging and evocative, with vivid descriptions that bring the setting of St. Simon’s Island to life. The beach house, with its chef’s kitchen and oceanfront views, serves as a metaphor for the possibility of new beginnings. The author’s attention to detail in describing the island’s landscape adds depth to the story, making it easy for readers to immerse themselves in the world she has created.
In terms of character development, Thompson excels in creating multidimensional characters who are flawed yet endearing. Diehl's journey from a workaholic grieving widower to a man open to love is portrayed with sensitivity and authenticity. Similarly, Skye’s evolution from a cautious chef to a woman willing to embrace love is handled with grace. The supporting characters, including Diehl’s children and family, add richness to the narrative, providing a broader context for the protagonists’ personal growth.
Comparatively, Sing with Me shares thematic similarities with Nicholas Sparks' novels, such as The Notebook and A Walk to Remember, where love serves as a catalyst for personal transformation. However, Thompson’s unique blend of romance and faith-based elements sets her work apart, offering a fresh perspective on the genre.
Overall, Sing with Me is a beautifully crafted story that resonates with readers on multiple levels. It is a tale of love, loss, and the enduring power of hope. Jan Thompson has created a narrative that is both heartwarming and thought-provoking, making it a must-read for fans of contemporary romance. The book's exploration of themes such as redemption, faith, and the importance of family adds depth to the story, ensuring that it leaves a lasting impact on its audience.
For those looking to lose themselves in a story of love and redemption, Sing with Me is a compelling choice that promises to deliver both emotional depth and a satisfying romantic journey.
