Shaped to Be Yours
by Amanda Meuwissen
It isn’t only werewolves that thrive in moonlight.
Jason Bosco thought life was difficult enough hiding that he was a werewolf. Being outed officially, but with the benefit of a monster friend to vouch for him for a visa, doesn’t change that everyone he knows looks at him differently now. Worse, he can’t be sure if a werewolf is what he is. But if not that, what? And what of the father he never knew, who disappeared one night in the wood behind his home in Elder Ridge?
Back there again to take time off after college to figure out who and what he is and what he wants from life, Jason’s one solace is that Ricky came with him. His… boyfriend? They’ve barely kissed. Still on the Monster Match app under a human profile, Jason now uses it to talk with his monster friends for advice, like Cael, the eldritch with a voice that can knock a person unconscious and a stare that might drive them insane. But if Cael found love and a place to belong, maybe Jason can too, and move forward with his quest to discover himself and to be with Ricky like he always wanted.
Ricky Ruas has always had a soft spot for monsters. He designed his physics major toward becoming a cosmologist, so he can study the portals and the differences between the human and monster realms. The more people understand, the more they can accept the strange and frightening. Like Ricky is trying to accept discovering that his best friend is a monster who has been in love with him for years.
It’s still new, but when an opportunity presents itself to intern with some of the best monster realm scientists in Jason’s hometown, Ricky jumps at the chance to stay by his friend’s—boyfriend’s?—side so they can see where this relationship goes. No one ever said dating a monster didn’t come with complications, however, and sometimes with mysteries as intriguing as the monster realm itself.

Amanda Meuwissen's Shaped to Be Yours is a captivating exploration of identity, love, and the complexities of living between two worlds. Set against the backdrop of a world where humans and monsters coexist, this novel delves into the intricacies of self-discovery and acceptance, both personal and societal. The narrative follows Jason Bosco, a young man grappling with his identity as a werewolf—or perhaps something else entirely—and his evolving relationship with his best friend, Ricky Ruas.
One of the most compelling aspects of Shaped to Be Yours is its nuanced portrayal of identity. Jason's journey is not just about understanding his supernatural nature but also about coming to terms with who he is as a person. The novel deftly handles themes of self-discovery and the fear of the unknown, both within oneself and in the world at large. Jason's struggle with his identity is relatable to anyone who has ever felt different or out of place, making his journey both personal and universal.
Meuwissen's character development is another standout feature of the book. Jason is a well-rounded protagonist whose internal conflicts are portrayed with depth and sensitivity. His relationship with Ricky is central to the narrative, and their dynamic is both heartwarming and realistic. The uncertainty of their relationship status—are they friends, boyfriends, or something in between?—adds a layer of tension and excitement to the story. Ricky's character is equally well-developed, with his passion for cosmology and understanding the monster realm providing a fascinating subplot that complements the main narrative.
The supporting characters in Shaped to Be Yours are equally intriguing. Cael, the eldritch being with a voice that can incapacitate and a gaze that might drive one insane, is a particularly memorable character. His own journey to find love and belonging offers a parallel to Jason's, reinforcing the novel's themes of acceptance and self-discovery. The Monster Match app, a clever narrative device, serves as a bridge between the human and monster worlds, allowing for interactions that are both humorous and insightful.
Meuwissen's world-building is another highlight of the novel. The concept of portals between the human and monster realms is richly imagined, and the scientific exploration of these portals adds an intriguing layer of complexity to the story. Ricky's internship with monster realm scientists provides a fascinating glimpse into the intersection of science and the supernatural, and the novel raises thought-provoking questions about the nature of reality and the boundaries between worlds.
In terms of thematic depth, Shaped to Be Yours explores the idea of acceptance on multiple levels. Jason's journey is not just about accepting his supernatural identity but also about finding acceptance from those around him. The novel challenges societal norms and prejudices, encouraging readers to embrace diversity and the unknown. This theme is particularly relevant in today's world, where issues of identity and acceptance are at the forefront of social discourse.
Comparatively, Shaped to Be Yours shares thematic similarities with other works in the genre, such as Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver series, which also explores the complexities of identity and love in a supernatural context. However, Meuwissen's novel distinguishes itself with its unique blend of humor, romance, and science fiction elements, creating a narrative that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.
Overall, Shaped to Be Yours is a beautifully crafted novel that offers a fresh take on the werewolf genre. Amanda Meuwissen's skillful storytelling and rich character development make this a must-read for fans of supernatural romance and anyone interested in stories of self-discovery and acceptance. The novel's exploration of identity, love, and the intersection of human and monster worlds is both timely and timeless, offering readers a poignant reminder of the importance of understanding and embracing our true selves.
In conclusion, Shaped to Be Yours is a testament to Amanda Meuwissen's talent as a storyteller. Her ability to weave together complex themes, engaging characters, and a richly imagined world results in a novel that is both entertaining and meaningful. Whether you're a fan of supernatural romance or simply looking for a story that challenges you to think about identity and acceptance in new ways, this book is sure to leave a lasting impression.
