Sex. Love. Marriage.
by Shey Stahl
Relationships are broken down into categories. I’ll start with the first one.
1.Sex. For Kelly and me, that part was easy. Shhh. Don’t tell her dad. He’s always hated me. No need to give him further evidence.
2.Love. I knew the moment Kelly punched me in the ear for stealing her car that I loved her. Which also leads back to her dad hating me, but whatever. There’s a good reason behind the car stealing. If you ask her, probably not.
If the sex and love work out, it usually ends in… drum roll, please…. You guessed it.
3.Marriage. Being married is ridiculously hard. Staying married, even harder. I can give you some advice, but you probably shouldn’t listen to me. I took advice from a porn star, took a tiny blue pill, and fell through a shower door. I’d like to never remember that night again.
Somewhere along this terrifying journey of marriage and parenthood—my swimmers made five of the little sh*ts angels—our relationship as husband and wife fell apart. I can pinpoint the exact moment, as you’ll soon see, but that’s what leads me to this.
Sex. Love. Marriage. And all the chaos in between. I’m not proud of what I resorted to at times and completely own my dumbass moments, but we’re friends, right? Proceed with caution.

Shey Stahl's Sex. Love. Marriage. is a candid exploration of the complexities of relationships, told through the lens of a protagonist who is as flawed as he is relatable. The book is a raw, humorous, and sometimes painfully honest account of the journey from lust to love, and eventually, to the challenging terrain of marriage. It is a narrative that resonates with anyone who has ever been in a relationship, offering both a mirror and a magnifying glass to the intricacies of human connection.
The story is structured around three pivotal themes: sex, love, and marriage. Each theme is dissected with a blend of humor and sincerity that is characteristic of Stahl's writing. The protagonist, whose voice is both engaging and self-deprecating, provides a first-person account that draws readers into his world. From the outset, the book sets a tone that is both light-hearted and introspective, inviting readers to laugh at the absurdities of life while also reflecting on their own experiences.
**Character development** is one of the book's strongest suits. The protagonist, who remains unnamed in the blurb, is a character that readers will find themselves rooting for despite his many shortcomings. His journey is one of growth and self-discovery, marked by moments of hilarity and heartbreak. Kelly, his partner, is portrayed as a strong, independent woman who is not afraid to stand up for herself. Their dynamic is both entertaining and poignant, capturing the essence of a real-life relationship with all its ups and downs.
Stahl's portrayal of marriage is particularly noteworthy. The book does not shy away from depicting the challenges that come with long-term commitment. Instead, it embraces the chaos and messiness of married life, offering a realistic portrayal that is often missing from romantic fiction. The protagonist's admission of his "dumbass moments" is refreshingly honest, and his willingness to own up to his mistakes adds depth to his character. This level of authenticity is what sets Sex. Love. Marriage. apart from other books in the genre.
The **themes** of the book are universal, yet Stahl manages to present them in a way that feels fresh and original. The exploration of sex is handled with a mix of humor and sensitivity, avoiding the pitfalls of gratuitousness that often plague similar narratives. Love is depicted as both a powerful force and a fragile entity, capable of both uplifting and devastating those who experience it. Marriage, the final theme, is portrayed as a journey rather than a destination, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and communication.
One of the book's standout features is its **humor**. Stahl has a knack for comedic timing, and the protagonist's witty observations provide a constant source of amusement. The humor is balanced with moments of genuine emotion, creating a narrative that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. The book's ability to oscillate between comedy and drama is a testament to Stahl's skill as a writer.
In comparison to other works in the genre, Sex. Love. Marriage. stands out for its authenticity and relatability. While books like Nick Hornby's High Fidelity and Jonathan Tropper's This Is Where I Leave You also explore the intricacies of relationships, Stahl's work is distinguished by its focus on the everyday realities of marriage and parenthood. The book's portrayal of these themes is both realistic and optimistic, offering readers a sense of hope amidst the chaos.
Overall, Sex. Love. Marriage. is a compelling read that will resonate with anyone who has ever navigated the complexities of a relationship. It is a book that offers both laughter and insight, reminding readers of the importance of love, patience, and understanding. Stahl's ability to capture the essence of human connection is what makes this book a standout in its genre. Whether you're in a relationship, married, or simply curious about the intricacies of love, this book is sure to leave a lasting impression.
In conclusion, Shey Stahl's Sex. Love. Marriage. is a must-read for anyone who appreciates a story that is both entertaining and meaningful. Its exploration of the themes of sex, love, and marriage is both insightful and engaging, making it a valuable addition to any reader's collection. The book's humor, authenticity, and relatable characters make it a standout in the genre, offering a fresh perspective on the complexities of human relationships.
