Run, Run Rudolph
by Jean Oram
Christmas is the best time of the year…except when you accidentally hit Rudolph with your car.
I’ve had a year. I’ve moved back home. Given my ex a second chance. (And failed.) And now I’m slowly caving like a wedding cake left out in the rain under my mother’s pressure to hurry up and marry. Someone. Anyone. Before all the good ones are gone.
Small town living at its best, right?
Well, one good man isn’t gone yet. Unfortunately, this hunky veterinarian has a county-wide fan group blowing up his phone with fake animal emergencies. Oh, and Haden’s also my ex-boyfriend’s older brother.
Totally off limits.
But when I run over Rudolph—totally not my fault as he was out playing reindeer games before his big night of guiding Santa’s sleigh through a huge Canadian blizzard—Haden is the only one I can think to call.
But will he be able to see Rudolph’s nose, too? Or will he think I’m as crazy as the rabid women leading his fan group? And what will happen to us both when we interact (*cough, cough* and kinda interfere *cough, cough*) with the magical world just before its most important date of the year?
A small town, age gap, ex-boyfriend’s brother, Christmas romance that is a romantic comedy, and also paranormal (ish), but don’t forget it’s also a sweet, closed door romance that’s also light romantasy. Whew. Yeah. It’s got all the things. And also set in Canada, eh? So grab your toque* and let’s read!
* Toque (n: toock): A warm knitted cap in Canadian speak. You know…a toque so you don’t freeze your noggin.

Jean Oram's Run, Run Rudolph is a delightful romp through the snowy landscapes of small-town Canada, where romance, comedy, and a touch of the paranormal blend seamlessly to create a heartwarming holiday tale. This novel is a testament to Oram's ability to weave together multiple genres, offering readers a story that is as multifaceted as it is entertaining.
The premise of the book is both whimsical and intriguing: the protagonist, who remains unnamed in the blurb, accidentally hits Rudolph with her car. This incident sets off a chain of events that are both humorous and touching, as she navigates the complexities of small-town life, familial expectations, and rekindled romance. The protagonist's journey is relatable to anyone who has ever felt the pressure of societal and familial expectations, especially during the holiday season. Her struggle to find her own path amidst these pressures is a central theme of the book, and Oram handles it with both sensitivity and humor.
One of the standout elements of the novel is its setting. The small-town Canadian backdrop is vividly depicted, with Oram capturing the charm and quirks of rural life. The setting serves as more than just a backdrop; it is integral to the story, influencing the characters' actions and the unfolding of events. The Canadian winter, with its snow-covered landscapes and cozy interiors, adds a layer of warmth and nostalgia to the narrative, making it a perfect read for the holiday season.
The character development in Run, Run Rudolph is another highlight. The protagonist is a well-rounded character, with her flaws and insecurities making her relatable and endearing. Her interactions with Haden, the hunky veterinarian and her ex-boyfriend's older brother, are filled with chemistry and tension. Haden is portrayed as a kind and compassionate character, whose love for animals and dedication to his work make him an appealing romantic interest. The dynamic between the protagonist and Haden is central to the story, and Oram skillfully develops their relationship, balancing humor and romance with ease.
The novel also explores themes of second chances and personal growth. The protagonist's return to her hometown and her decision to give her ex a second chance, only to realize it was a mistake, is a poignant exploration of the complexities of relationships. Her journey towards self-discovery and acceptance is inspiring, and Oram handles these themes with a deft touch, ensuring that they resonate with readers.
Oram's writing style is engaging and accessible, with a light-hearted tone that complements the story's romantic and comedic elements. The dialogue is witty and sharp, adding to the overall charm of the novel. The inclusion of paranormal elements, such as the magical world and Rudolph's involvement, adds an unexpected twist to the story, making it stand out from other holiday romances.
In comparison to other similar stories, Run, Run Rudolph holds its own with its unique blend of romance, comedy, and fantasy. Fans of authors like Debbie Macomber and Jenny Colgan, who are known for their heartwarming holiday tales, will find much to enjoy in Oram's novel. However, Oram's inclusion of paranormal elements and the Canadian setting give the book a distinct flavor that sets it apart from its contemporaries.
Overall, Run, Run Rudolph is a charming and entertaining read that captures the magic of the holiday season. Its blend of romance, comedy, and fantasy, coupled with its relatable themes and well-developed characters, make it a standout addition to the holiday romance genre. Whether you're looking for a light-hearted escape or a story that delves into the complexities of relationships and personal growth, this novel is sure to delight and entertain.
In conclusion, Jean Oram has crafted a delightful holiday tale that is sure to warm the hearts of readers. With its engaging characters, charming setting, and unique blend of genres, Run, Run Rudolph is a must-read for anyone looking to add a touch of magic to their holiday reading list.
