Ruarc
by Jennifer Julie Miller
Kallen
My amber eyes and royal blood have set me apart my entire life, no matter how much I wished differently. I have only ever wanted to fit in and be treated the same as everyone else, but no matter how hard I try, I am always rejected. I am the Princess of Nothing, sitting upon an invisible throne with no subjects to worship me. But my title did not stop the Velgriddix. Those bugs did not care who I was supposed to be since all they wanted was the vessel of my body. Time became a blur of suffering and sacrifice until powerful arms emerged from the mist, and I saw a set of bright, purple eyes promising me the connection I had always craved. I thought the gods of Ruk had heard my prayers, but the darkness within the one who should have been my savior has destroyed all I ever dreamed of. Now I seek only the solace of peace, either in this world or the next.
Ruarc
The gods must be playing a cruel joke by pairing a worthless miner and a princess. I have nothing to offer her but struggles and heartache. So, I tell myself that I do not want her, or anyone else for that matter, but no matter how hard I fight against the will of the gods, I am truly failing at pushing their blessing away. My eyes constantly seek out my obsession, while my mouth and body shove her away. I crave her almost to the point of madness, but I refuse to fail her like I have all the others. Even though her tears rip my hearts out, I will never be worthy of her, no matter how I wish things could be otherwise. She thinks I am being stubborn, but it is so much more complicated than that. The evil that resides within me is unpredictable and unstable, so I fight it with every breath I take. I have already caused her tears of heartache, but I would want to stop existing if they turned to tears of terror instead.
This storyline ends in a HEA, but continues on throughout the remaining series as each book concentrates on a particular couple. Have questions?? Keep reading, all will be revealed….

Jennifer Julie Miller's Ruarc is a compelling blend of fantasy and romance that delves into the complexities of identity, destiny, and the eternal struggle between light and darkness. The novel, set in a richly imagined world, introduces readers to Kallen and Ruarc, two characters whose lives are intertwined by fate and the whims of the gods. Through their journey, Miller explores themes of belonging, self-worth, and the transformative power of love.
The narrative opens with Kallen, a princess burdened by her royal lineage and the unique amber eyes that set her apart. Her desire to fit in and be accepted is a universal theme that resonates deeply, making her a relatable character despite her fantastical circumstances. Kallen's struggle with her identity and the rejection she faces is poignantly portrayed, drawing readers into her world of isolation and longing. Her characterization is nuanced, as Miller deftly balances her vulnerability with an underlying strength that emerges as the story progresses.
In contrast, Ruarc is introduced as a miner, seemingly unworthy of the princess he is destined to be with. His internal conflict is palpable, as he grapples with feelings of inadequacy and the fear of succumbing to the darkness within him. Ruarc's journey is one of self-discovery and redemption, as he battles his demons to become the man he believes Kallen deserves. Miller's portrayal of Ruarc is both sympathetic and compelling, as she captures the complexity of a character torn between his desires and his fears.
The dynamic between Kallen and Ruarc is the heart of the novel, and Miller excels in crafting a relationship that is both tumultuous and tender. Their interactions are charged with emotion, as they navigate the challenges posed by their respective pasts and the expectations of their roles. The tension between their longing for each other and the barriers they face is expertly maintained, keeping readers invested in their journey. The chemistry between the two is undeniable, and their eventual union is both satisfying and believable, providing the promised happy ending while leaving room for further exploration in the series.
One of the standout aspects of Ruarc is Miller's world-building. The setting of Ruk is vividly realized, with its own mythology and lore that enrich the narrative. The presence of the Velgriddix, the insect-like creatures that threaten Kallen, adds an element of danger and urgency to the story. Miller's attention to detail in crafting the world of Ruk enhances the immersive quality of the novel, drawing readers into a realm that feels both familiar and fantastical.
The themes of identity and destiny are central to the novel, as both Kallen and Ruarc grapple with their roles in a world that seems predetermined. Miller explores the tension between free will and fate, as her characters strive to carve out their own paths despite the expectations placed upon them. This exploration is thought-provoking, inviting readers to reflect on their own lives and the choices they make.
In terms of style, Miller's prose is engaging and accessible, with a lyrical quality that enhances the emotional depth of the story. Her ability to convey complex emotions with clarity and sensitivity is a testament to her skill as a writer. The pacing of the novel is well-balanced, with moments of introspection interspersed with action and suspense, ensuring that readers remain captivated throughout.
Comparatively, Ruarc shares thematic similarities with other fantasy romances, such as Sarah J. Maas's A Court of Thorns and Roses series, where characters must navigate the intricacies of love and power in a richly detailed world. However, Miller's focus on the internal struggles of her characters sets her work apart, offering a more introspective take on the genre.
Overall, Ruarc is a beautifully crafted tale that will appeal to fans of fantasy and romance alike. Jennifer Julie Miller has created a story that is both epic in scope and intimate in its exploration of the human heart. With its compelling characters, intricate world-building, and resonant themes, Ruarc is a testament to the enduring power of love and the resilience of the human spirit. As the first installment in a series, it promises an exciting continuation of the journey, leaving readers eager for more.
