Roommate
by Sarina Bowen
Wanted: One roommate to share a 3-bedroom house, split the rent, and ideally not be the guy I can’t stop thinking about.
I’m a man with too many secrets, so the last thing I need is a new roommate with a sexy smile and blue eyes that see right through me. Eight years ago, Roderick left town after high school. We’re not friends. I owe him nothing. But back then, I let one of my secrets slip, and he’s the only one who noticed.
Part of me knows I should run far, far away. But the other part wants him to come upstairs and spend the night. But if I let him in, I could lose everything.
Seeking: A room to rent in town. I’m tidy, have no pets, and I will feed you homemade bread.
I should probably add: Gay AF, and has no filter. It’s no wonder my new landlord is so wary of me.
A smarter man would ignore those hot glances from Kieran Shipley. The broody lumberjack wants more from me than another homemade pretzel, but if I push my luck, I’ll end up back on the street.
Too bad I’ve never been smart with my heart …

Roommate by Sarina Bowen is an evocative narrative that explores the complexities of love, identity, and the search for acceptance. This contemporary romance novel not only delivers a heartwarming love story but also digs deep into sensitive themes with grace and empathy. Bowen's ability to blend humor with poignant moments makes Roommate an engaging read from start to finish.
The novel centers on the lives of Kieran Shipley and Roderick Waites, who find themselves living together under unexpected circumstances. Kieran, hailing from rural Vermont, seeks to escape the heavy expectations of his family’s apple orchard business, while Roderick, an aspiring musician, tries to get his life back on track after a tumultuous break-up. The chemistry between the two protagonists is palpable from the beginning, but their journey is not just about romance; it's also a profound exploration of self-discovery and coming to terms with one's past.
Bowen writes with an authentic and insightful pen. Kieran, struggling with the weight of familial responsibilities and his longing for independence, is crafted with depth and realism. His internal conflicts are portrayed with a delicate balance of strength and vulnerability, making him a relatable and endearing character. On the other hand, Roderick’s character is a celebration of resilience. An openly gay man who has faced rejection and hardship, his vibrant and optimistic outlook provides a stark contrast to Kieran’s more reserved nature. The juxtaposition of their personalities not only fuels their romantic relationship but also drives the narrative forward, making the story both intriguing and heartfelt.
One of the standout aspects of Roommate is how effectively Bowen handles the theme of acceptance. Through the challenges Kieran and Roderick face, both within their relationship and from external societal pressures, Bowen skillfully discusses the issues of homophobia and the struggle for identity acceptance in a conservative setting. The way these themes are woven into the fabric of the story allows the reader to engage deeply with the characters’ battles and triumphs, making their eventual emotional growth satisfying and inspiring.
The setting of the novel adds another layer of charm. Vermont, with its picturesque landscapes and tight-knit communities, is depicted beautifully. Bowen captures the essence of rural life—the tranquility as well as the isolation—and how it shapes the lives and attitudes of its inhabitants. This backdrop not only enhances the aesthetic of the narrative but also complements the storyline, reflecting the protagonist's internal landscapes.
Bowen’s writing style is fluid and engaging, making it easy to get lost in the pages of the book. The dialogues are sharp and witty, keeping the interactions between the characters lively and realistic. The pacing of the story is adeptly handled; even though the narrative takes its time to develop, it does not drag. Instead, it allows the reader to fully immerse themselves in the emotional nuances of the story. Additionally, the secondary characters are well developed, enriching the story's world with their diverse personalities and backgrounds.
However, the novel does occasionally delve into clichés typical of the romance genre. Some plot twists can be seen coming from a mile away, which might deter some readers looking for a more unpredictable narrative. Nonetheless, these elements do not significantly detract from the overall enjoyment of the book. Instead, they add a comfortingly familiar beat to the flow of the story that fans of romance will likely appreciate.
In conclusion, Roommate by Sarina Bowen is a compelling blend of romance and serious themes like self-acceptance and societal acceptance. Bowen’s ability to create complex, likable characters and place them in a setting that vibrates with life speaks to her strength as a writer. This book will appeal to readers who enjoy contemporary romance with depth and are looking for characters that resonate with authenticity and emotional richness.
