Aubree
I’ll take ‘listen to and use my grandma’s advice’ for $500. There are times I feel like my life has played out like a game show taking chances to see if I will win or lose. For the most part, it seems like I am always losing.
“Even though you didn’t win, Aubree, no one goes home empty handed. Tell her what she won, Bob!” The drum roll cues.
“She is going home with a year supply of His Bull Shit! Yes, five years of my ex, Gerald’s, bull shit. is what I get for not listening to my grandma. I lost my job, got kicked out of our house, and I’m $45,000 in debt… not to mention there are drug dealers after me because of HIM. This goes beyond learning a lesson the hard way; it is plain and simple stupidity.
Meeting, and falling in love with Gerald Simmons is the worst thing that could have ever happened to Aubree Rogers. She’s instantly blinded by love when the two become an item, which leads her down a dark and windy path she could have never expected to be on.
Aubree has dreams of becoming a professional dancer and owning a performing arts center to give back to her community, but Gerald’s tendencies of being financially irresponsible and raging drug habit render them broke, and forces Aubree to do something she promised her grandmother she never would. In one night, Aubree’s life turns upside down when she finds out Gerald’s problems are spilling over into her life, and she now becomes responsible for an additional quarter-million-dollar debt, putting her life at stake.
Aubree escapes to the comfort of her grandmother’s home in her hometown of Dawson Falls, where she’s able to start over and reconnect with the friends she left behind. Her dreams of owning a performing arts center have never been closer, but also farther away, than when she meets Grant Hollings, the cause and possible cure to all of her financial troubles.
Grant is looking for a nanny for his daughter Chanel, and what he finds in Aubree is companionship, something he never thought he’d find again after Chanel’s mother turns out to be nothing more than a gold digger. Grant worries Aubree is an opportunist, and Aubree, due to her negligent mother’s experience with men, knows all too well what the involvement with a wealthy man can do to a family. She told herself she’d focus on herself and not worry about love, but Grant’s everything she’s ever wanted. Aubree can finally have it all… as long as her past doesn’t catch up to her present…

Taylyn Woods’ Return to Dawson Falls is a compelling narrative that intertwines themes of redemption, self-discovery, and the enduring power of familial bonds. The story follows Aubree Rogers, a young woman whose life has been derailed by a toxic relationship, as she attempts to rebuild her life and pursue her dreams. Woods crafts a tale that is both heart-wrenching and inspiring, offering readers a journey that is as much about personal growth as it is about overcoming adversity.
At the heart of the novel is Aubree, a character whose resilience and determination are both her greatest strengths and her most significant vulnerabilities. Woods does an exceptional job of developing Aubree’s character, allowing readers to witness her transformation from a woman overwhelmed by her circumstances to one who takes control of her destiny. Aubree’s journey is a testament to the power of self-belief and the importance of listening to one’s instincts, even when the odds seem insurmountable.
The novel opens with Aubree at her lowest point, having lost everything due to her relationship with Gerald Simmons. Woods’ portrayal of Aubree’s initial struggles is both realistic and relatable, capturing the emotional turmoil that comes with betrayal and financial ruin. The author’s use of vivid imagery and a conversational tone draws readers into Aubree’s world, making her plight feel immediate and personal. The metaphor of life as a game show, with its inherent unpredictability and risk, is a clever device that underscores the novel’s themes of chance and choice.
As Aubree returns to her hometown of Dawson Falls, the narrative shifts to focus on themes of homecoming and renewal. The small-town setting is depicted with warmth and authenticity, providing a stark contrast to the chaos of Aubree’s previous life. Woods uses Dawson Falls as a backdrop to explore the idea of starting over, emphasizing the importance of community and support in the healing process. The town’s residents, particularly Aubree’s grandmother, serve as anchors for Aubree, offering her the stability and encouragement she needs to pursue her dreams.
One of the novel’s most compelling aspects is its exploration of Aubree’s dreams of becoming a professional dancer and owning a performing arts center. Woods captures the passion and dedication required to pursue such a dream, highlighting the sacrifices and challenges that come with it. Aubree’s aspirations serve as a driving force in the narrative, motivating her to confront her past and take control of her future. The author’s depiction of dance as both an art form and a means of self-expression adds depth to Aubree’s character, making her journey all the more poignant.
The introduction of Grant Hollings adds a romantic element to the story, providing a counterbalance to Aubree’s personal struggles. Grant is a well-drawn character, whose own experiences with love and betrayal mirror Aubree’s in many ways. Woods skillfully navigates the complexities of their relationship, exploring themes of trust, vulnerability, and the fear of repeating past mistakes. The chemistry between Aubree and Grant is palpable, and their interactions are marked by a genuine sense of camaraderie and mutual respect.
However, Woods does not shy away from the challenges that come with their burgeoning relationship. Both characters carry emotional baggage, and their journey towards love is fraught with misunderstandings and doubts. The author’s exploration of these issues adds depth to the narrative, making the eventual resolution all the more satisfying. Aubree’s internal conflict, torn between her desire for independence and her feelings for Grant, is particularly well-handled, reflecting the broader theme of balancing personal and professional aspirations.
Woods’ writing is both engaging and evocative, with a keen eye for detail and a talent for crafting memorable characters. The dialogue is sharp and realistic, capturing the nuances of human interaction and adding authenticity to the narrative. The pacing is well-judged, allowing the story to unfold naturally while maintaining a sense of momentum. The author’s ability to blend humor and pathos is particularly noteworthy, providing moments of levity amidst the novel’s more serious themes.
In comparison to other contemporary romance novels, Return to Dawson Falls stands out for its focus on personal growth and the importance of community. While the romantic subplot is a key element of the story, it is Aubree’s journey of self-discovery that takes center stage. This emphasis on character development and thematic depth sets the novel apart from more conventional romances, offering readers a richer and more rewarding experience.
Overall, Return to Dawson Falls is a beautifully crafted novel that resonates with readers on multiple levels. Taylyn Woods has created a story that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, with characters who linger in the mind long after the final page is turned. Aubree’s journey is one of hope and resilience, reminding us of the power of dreams and the strength of the human spirit. For anyone seeking a story of redemption and renewal, this novel is a must-read.
