Resting Grump Face
by Quinn Swanson
I really hate injustice… and Ryker Grayson.
Well, especially Mr. Grumpyson, because he is the personification of everything that is wrong with this world:
Arrogant billionaire,
egomaniacal bosshole,
ruthless breaker-of-hearts,
and because the universe is an exceptionally cruel place, he’s also undeservingly beautiful.
Nonetheless, I still believe in Karma.
Sometimes she just needs a little help, which is where I come in:
When I see something, I don’t say something. I do something.
My mistake was that I did Ryker Grumbleson before I knew who he was…
and then I also might have gotten him arrested right after. (Although that could have been Karma, who knows!)
In an attempt to retaliate, he tries to hire me as his personal PR consultant.
I begrudgingly accept because the money will allow me to save my 78-year-old friend and neighbor from getting evicted.
Now all I need to do is survive two looong and torturous weeks working under Ryker I aLwAyS gEt WhAt I wAnT Grayson.
WITH… I mean ‘working with’, definitely not ‘under’.
After all, I know better than to get involved with someone like him… again.
A slowburn, laugh-out-loud, enemies-to-lovers RomCom standalone with some steamy sizzle between an alpha bosshole and a strong and sassy heroine who can’t help but put themselves in close proximity of each other (although, that could be Karma too).
Spoiler: There’s a cat and the cat will be fine!

Quinn Swanson's Resting Grump Face is a delightful foray into the world of romantic comedy, where the classic enemies-to-lovers trope is given a fresh and humorous twist. The book offers a blend of witty dialogue, engaging characters, and a plot that keeps readers entertained from start to finish. At its core, this novel is about the unexpected ways in which love can blossom amidst misunderstandings and preconceived notions.
The story revolves around two central characters: the fiery and determined protagonist, whose name remains intriguingly absent from the blurb, and the seemingly insufferable Ryker Grayson, a man who embodies the archetype of the "arrogant billionaire." From the outset, Swanson sets the stage for a battle of wits and wills, as our heroine finds herself entangled with Ryker in a series of comedic and awkward situations. The initial animosity between them is palpable, fueled by her disdain for his egotistical demeanor and his reputation as a "ruthless breaker-of-hearts."
One of the novel's strengths lies in its character development. Swanson crafts a protagonist who is not only relatable but also admirable in her convictions. Her strong sense of justice and willingness to take action against perceived wrongs make her a compelling character. Her interactions with Ryker are laced with sarcasm and humor, creating a dynamic that is both entertaining and endearing. As the story progresses, readers witness her growth as she navigates the complexities of her feelings towards Ryker, ultimately realizing that there is more to him than meets the eye.
Ryker Grayson, on the other hand, is initially portrayed as the quintessential "bosshole," a term that perfectly encapsulates his seemingly insufferable nature. However, Swanson skillfully peels back the layers of his character, revealing a more nuanced and vulnerable side. His transformation from a seemingly one-dimensional antagonist to a multi-faceted character is a testament to Swanson's ability to craft believable and engaging character arcs. The gradual unveiling of Ryker's past and motivations adds depth to his character, making him more than just the "undeservingly beautiful" foil to the protagonist's fiery spirit.
The chemistry between the two leads is electric, and Swanson masterfully builds tension through their interactions. The slow burn of their relationship is punctuated by moments of genuine connection and vulnerability, allowing readers to become fully invested in their journey. The witty banter and comedic situations they find themselves in add a layer of levity to the narrative, ensuring that the romance never becomes overly saccharine or predictable.
Swanson's writing style is both engaging and accessible, with a keen sense of humor that permeates the narrative. The dialogue is sharp and often laugh-out-loud funny, capturing the essence of the rom-com genre. The author's ability to balance humor with moments of genuine emotion is commendable, as it allows the story to resonate on a deeper level. The inclusion of a cat, whose fate is humorously assured in the blurb, adds an additional layer of charm to the story, serving as a delightful subplot that complements the main narrative.
Thematically, Resting Grump Face explores the idea of preconceived notions and the importance of looking beyond surface appearances. The protagonist's initial judgment of Ryker is challenged as she learns more about him, highlighting the theme of personal growth and the transformative power of love. The novel also touches on issues of social justice and the impact of wealth and privilege, adding a layer of depth to the otherwise lighthearted narrative.
In comparison to other works in the enemies-to-lovers genre, Swanson's novel stands out for its unique blend of humor and heart. Fans of authors like Sally Thorne and Christina Lauren will find much to enjoy in Resting Grump Face, as it captures the same spirit of playful romance and character-driven storytelling. However, Swanson's distinctive voice and comedic flair ensure that the novel maintains its own identity within the genre.
Overall, Resting Grump Face is a thoroughly enjoyable read that will appeal to fans of romantic comedies and those looking for a story that combines humor, heart, and a touch of sass. Swanson's ability to craft engaging characters and a compelling narrative makes this book a standout in the genre. Whether you're a seasoned rom-com enthusiast or new to the world of romantic fiction, this novel is sure to leave you with a smile on your face and a newfound appreciation for the complexities of love.
