Resorting to Romance
by Savannah Scott
My plate is full enough being a single mom and business owner. I don’t have time to date, not even to fake it.
I’m the only child to three “fairy godmothers.” Yes. You heard me right. My somewhat-crazy, definitely over-the-top aunts all raised me. And now, I’m running the bed and breakfast I inherited from my grandmother, while I raise my seven-year-old son, Noah, single-handedly.
I probably hold the island records for “most likely to turn down a date,” and “least likely to take a day off.” So when Kai Kapule, the manager of the resort’s water sports rentals steps in, pretending to be my boyfriend, I’m quite sure my jaw drops alongside everyone else’s
It’s not the first time Kai’s come to my rescue. But, usually he’s doing things like fixing a leaky faucet or repairing a loose floorboard, not … declaring his status as my boyfriend.
With my ex, Noah’s dad, back on the island, I honestly need an extra layer of insulation against any misguided thoughts he might have of the two of us ever getting back together. What can it hurt to let Kai play the role of doting boyfriend? We both know it’s not real.
Kai’s just pitching in, being his usual protective, charming self.
The trouble comes when we have to act on Kai’s declaration just to keep up appearances. What started as a seemingly harmless declaration is quickly turning into a complicated charade. How long can I resist Kai’s warm caramel gaze, the caring tone in his voice, or the way my body reacts when he innocently touches me? And when he takes care of my son, Noah, I’m basically a goner.
The problem: I can’t date Kai Kapule. And the longer we pretend we’re more than friends, the more it’s going to hurt when I have to let him go.

Set against the idyllic backdrop of a lush seaside resort, Resorting to Romance captures the essence of escapism that many readers crave, intertwined with relatable issues and emotional growth.
The story revolves around Emma Bradley, a driven event planner from New York City, who finds herself tasked with organizing a high-profile wedding at the Coral Cove Resort. Here she meets the charming but enigmatic resort manager, Jack Cooper. Emma’s initial picture-perfect expectations of a tranquil work setting are quickly overturned by unexpected challenges, her dynamic with Jack being a central element. The novel cleverly navigates through their initial animosity to a complex relationship that forms the crux of the narrative.
Scott skillfully administers a slow-burn romance, which allows readers to immerse fully into each character's personal dilemmas and the evolving dynamics between Emma and Jack. Emma, with her meticulous planning and high standards, and Jack, with his laid-back approach and deep-rooted connection to the resort, initially clash but gradually uncover shared ground. Their romance blossoms believably, surrounded by a medley of well-rounded secondary characters who add depth and humor to the story.
The book’s setting at Coral Cove Resort is vividly drawn, making it almost a character in its own right. Scott’s descriptions are lush and transporting, depicting a paradise that contrasts yet complements the emotional intensity and complexity between the main characters. The scenic descriptions add a rich layer of sensory detail that propels the narrative forward, providing a perfect escape for romance lovers.
On a thematic level, Resorting to Romance explores more than just romantic love. It delves into issues of career ambitions, family expectations, and the courage to pursue personal happiness against societal pressures. Emma’s journey is particularly poignant as she grapples with her ideas of success and fulfillment, reflecting broader contemporary challenges. Likewise, Jack’s backstory and his doubts about the future of the resort add depth to his character, making him more than just a romantic lead.
Savannah Scott’s writing style exudes warmth and ease, making it accessible yet emotionally rich. Her dialogue is sharp and often laced with humor, which makes the interactions between her characters sparkle with authenticity. Moreover, the pacing of the story is mostly well-measured, although there are moments, particularly towards the middle of the book, where the plot meanders slightly before picking up speed ahead of the climax.
However, the novel is not without its predictabilities. Certain tropes common to the romance genre are in full play here, and seasoned readers might find elements of the narrative arc familiar. Despite these predictable paths, the story’s execution remains enjoyable, primarily due to Scott’s ability to create characters whose vulnerabilities and desires are palpable and relatable.
The resolution of the story is satisfying, tying up the myriad emotional threads in a conclusion that feels earned and true to the characters’ journeys. The development, from their misunderstandings to mutual respect and love, is handled with finesse, providing a gratifying conclusion for readers who invest in their romantic evolution.
