Pushing Patrick
by Megyn Ward
“Are you gonna tell her what happened?” His large, callused hand slips under my shirt, his fingers doing a relaxed slide up my ribcage while his hips do a slow grind against my backside.
“Nothing happened with Trevor. I told you—”
“That’s not what I’m talking about.” Laughter brushes against my ear a moment before he presses his mouth against the underside of my jaw. “And you know it.”
It was a bet.
A stupid bet.
One I never should have made.
One I knew, that could cost me everything…
To be honest, I didn’t even think it would work. I kissed Patrick the night we met and he couldn’t have made it clearer—he isn’t into me. Not like that. He’s funny, sweet and holy-shit-hot—entirely too good for a girl like me. He’s perfect and I’m… not.
So, we’re friends.
Just friends.
When my life falls apart and I need a place to live, Patrick comes to my rescue, no questions asked. I know it doesn’t mean anything. It’s just one friend, helping out another. I know that… but I can’t help but want more.
I can’t help but want him.
It’s my friend, Tess, who points out that Patrick may be perfect, but he’s still a man. That if I push hard enough, I can make him want me.
I know she’s wrong because I’ve been shot down by Patrick before and I have no desire to subject myself to it again… but what if she’s right?
What if all Patrick needs is a little push?
The last thing I expected was for him to push back.
Or to like it so much when he did.

Pushing Patrick, a novel by Megyn Ward, takes readers on a riveting journey of self-discovery, resilience, and the unpredictable nature of love. Ward, known for her skillful character development and engaging storytelling, does not disappoint with this latest addition to her repertoire. This contemporary romance, infused with realistic emotional dilemmas and sharp wit, makes for an entrancing read.
The story revolves around Eliza James, a young woman with a vibrant personality but a complex past that has shaped her into a fiercely independent individual. Her life takes a dramatic turn when she meets Patrick Sullivan, an enigmatic figure with struggles and secrets of his own. Patrick, a once-celebrated athlete, is coping with a career-ending injury that has not only dimmed his professional prospects but also cast a shadow over his personal life.
Ward crafts her characters with depth and authenticity. Eliza's resilience is particularly captivating, portrayed through her determination to maintain control over her life while grappling with vulnerability in her unexpected romance with Patrick. Similarly, Patrick is artfully depicted as a troubled soul seeking redemption and clarity—a man who must confront his demons in order to move forward.
The strength of Ward’s writing lies in her ability to weave complex emotional themes with light-hearted moments. The dialogues are crisp and often laden with humor, providing a relief from the intense emotions that the narrative evokes. The chemistry between Eliza and Patrick is palpable, making their interactions one of the highlights of the book. Their relationship progresses realistically, peppered with misunderstandings and reconciliations that reflect genuine relationship dynamics.
The setting of Pushing Patrick also plays a crucial role in the story. Ward’s descriptions of the small town where Eliza and Patrick’s paths cross are vivid and evocative, contributing to the book’s atmosphere. The town, with its close-knit community and scenic locales, becomes a character in its own right, adding depth to the narrative.
Themes of forgiveness and redemption are central to the narrative. Both Eliza and Patrick are depicted as flawed individuals who are learning to forgive themselves and each other. This journey is not depicted as straightforward or predictable. Instead, Ward emphasizes the messiness of life and relationships, which is what makes the story so relatable and compelling. The psychological depth she brings to her characters allows the reader to become deeply invested in their journey, rooting for their healing and happiness.
However, the book is not without its faults. At times, the pacing seems uneven, with some parts of the narrative dragging, particularly in the middle. Additionally, while the main characters are well-drawn, some of the secondary characters lack the same depth and come across as one-dimensional. Despite these minor flaws, Pushing Patrick remains an engaging read.
What sets this novel apart from standard entries in the romance genre is its nuanced approach to dealing with psychological and emotional barriers. Instead of offering generic solutions or unrealistic happy endings, Ward presents her characters' struggles as ongoing processes—suggesting that personal growth and healing are not destinations but journeys.
In conclusion, Pushing Patrick by Megyn Ward is a compelling tale of love, loss, and the courage to face one’s past. With its dynamic protagonists, emotional depth, and a well-drawn setting, it offers a refreshing take on the romance genre that will appeal to fans of complex character-driven narratives. Despite some pacing issues and underdeveloped secondary characters, the novel stands out for its realistic portrayal of personal growth and relationship dynamics. It is a testament to Ward's talent as a storyteller and her ability to engage readers with her thoughtful exploration of the human condition.
