Our Bender
by S.C. Kate
Josie:
You know those videos people get tagged in that are like - “If your boyfriend is named Garrett and he was at Firebird on 11/3… Sorry, but he’s cheating on you”?
Well, it sucks to be the fiancée at home being cheated on; it sucks worse getting tagged a million times while trying to forget about the whole thing and sleep.
So can you really blame me for going live on social media and getting drunk while destroying my fiance’s (ope– ex-fiance’s) fancy hockey suits and apartment?
Whatever. It happened. And it would’ve been fine if it weren’t for the fact that I’m a teacher and the now viral video will probably get me fired.
At least I already know what I’ll tell my administration about the video: Moving forward, I promise to avoid hockey players at all costs.
Tyler:
I finally masterminded my life to be perfect: I share a loft with my buddies, play on a dream hockey team, and am finally living close enough to visit my older brother all the time.
So when my stupid fortune cookie reads that I should “beware of strange changes in the last days of the year” and that “bad luck will haunt you to allow for good fortune in the new year”... well, I freak out. I am the most superstitious guy on my hockey team, so can you really blame me?
Fast-forward to me getting absolutely brickwalled by a goalie at my next game, and then being forced to participate in a school reading in the name of community outreach– I hate school.
I tried to grin and bear it with the whole school thing, I really did, but when my friends start teasing me that I don't know how to read in front of the hottest teacher I’ve ever seen… Well, I stupidly volunteer to read.
And my reading time was going really well… Until a kid’s snot-rocket landed right on my shoe and I said, oh fudgeeee. Unfortunately, I did not say the word ‘fudge’, if you know what I mean.
Now the hot teacher is yelling at me to wait in the hall.
And I just know the bad luck and “strange changes” aren’t going to stop here. I just wonder if the rest of the changes will be good or bad…

S.C. Kate's Our Bender is a delightful romp through the chaotic aftermath of a public breakup and the unexpected romance that follows. This novel, with its blend of humor, romance, and personal growth, offers readers a refreshing take on the classic trope of love found in the most unlikely of circumstances.
The story begins with Josie, a relatable and endearing protagonist, who finds herself at the center of a social media storm after discovering her fiancé's infidelity. The opening scene is both hilarious and heartbreaking, as Josie's drunken, live-streamed destruction of her ex-fiancé's belongings becomes a viral sensation. This incident sets the stage for the novel's exploration of themes such as betrayal, public scrutiny, and the quest for personal redemption.
Josie's character is well-developed, and readers will find themselves rooting for her as she navigates the fallout from her viral video. Her journey is one of self-discovery and empowerment, as she learns to reclaim her life and identity in the wake of betrayal. S.C. Kate does an excellent job of portraying Josie's vulnerability and strength, making her a character that readers can easily connect with and cheer for.
Enter Tyler, a charming and superstitious hockey player whose life is seemingly perfect until a series of unfortunate events, foretold by a cryptic fortune cookie, begin to unravel his carefully orchestrated existence. Tyler's character is a delightful contrast to Josie's; where she is impulsive and fiery, he is cautious and endearingly awkward. Their chemistry is palpable from their first encounter, and their interactions are filled with witty banter and genuine warmth.
The development of Josie and Tyler's relationship is one of the novel's highlights. S.C. Kate skillfully balances humor and romance, creating a dynamic that feels both authentic and engaging. The progression of their relationship is natural and believable, with each character bringing out the best in the other. As they navigate their respective challenges, they find solace and strength in each other, leading to a satisfying and heartwarming romance.
One of the novel's strengths is its exploration of the impact of social media on personal lives. Josie's viral video serves as a catalyst for much of the story's conflict, highlighting the double-edged sword of online fame. S.C. Kate addresses the pressures and consequences of living in a digital age, where privacy is often sacrificed for the sake of entertainment. This theme is particularly relevant in today's society, making the novel both timely and thought-provoking.
In addition to its central romance, Our Bender also delves into themes of friendship and community. Tyler's relationships with his hockey teammates and his brother add depth to his character and provide a sense of camaraderie that enriches the story. Similarly, Josie's interactions with her colleagues and students offer a glimpse into her life outside of her romantic entanglements, showcasing her dedication and passion as a teacher.
Comparatively, Our Bender shares similarities with other contemporary romance novels that feature unlikely pairings and viral fame, such as Christina Lauren's Roomies or Sally Thorne's The Hating Game. However, S.C. Kate's novel stands out due to its unique blend of humor and heartfelt emotion, as well as its focus on the transformative power of love and self-acceptance.
Overall, Our Bender is a charming and engaging read that will appeal to fans of romantic comedies and contemporary fiction. S.C. Kate has crafted a story that is both entertaining and meaningful, with characters that are sure to resonate with readers. Whether you're looking for a lighthearted escape or a story with depth and heart, Our Bender delivers on all fronts.
In conclusion, S.C. Kate's Our Bender is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the unexpected ways in which love can find us. With its memorable characters, witty dialogue, and poignant themes, this novel is a must-read for anyone seeking a story that is both humorous and heartfelt.
