Otter Heart
by Atreus Rosewood
Welcome to Hardwood Beach, the best beach with a ridiculous name on Lake Michigan. Where if the wind and waves don’t carry you away, your heart certainly will.
Adam
I’m done with men. After going through exactly one hundred guys, I’m certain there’s something wrong with me. That’s why I packed up and took myself to the lake cabin. I needed a summer to just work on me without any hint of romance.
However, my resolve for a boy-free summer quickly fades when a lost dog finds me on the trail and leads me back to his gorgeous owner, Mateo. He’s unlike anyone I’ve ever met. And he’s blind. But somehow, he sees me better than anyone else and the heat between us is electric and irresistible.
When my friends tell me I need to practice being open and honest in a relationship, I immediately think of Mateo. To my surprise, he agrees to be my fake boyfriend as long as we both get the bedroom benefits to go with it. Everything quickly becomes easy, fun, and full of long nights wrapped in each other’s arms.
There’s only one problem: I think I’m falling in love with him.
Mateo
For the past five years it’s just been me and my seeing eye dog, Bessie. I tried to date, but once a guy finds out I’m blind, he’s gone. So I just gave up, resolving to be happy alone despite what anyone else says. However, when Bessie returns with a gorgeous man in tow, I find myself completely smitten.
However, it’s obvious Adam has a boatload of baggage. But the sound of his smile enchants me and a single hand on his cheek tells me he’s about as handsome as they come. It was all too easy to fall into bed with him once he suggest a fake relationship. The only problem is, I’m falling for him.
How do I convince Adam to give me the chance to make him happy when he’s made it clear our relationship is only temporary?
Tropes: fake relationship, blind MC, a dog brings them together, hurt/comfort, grumpy/sunshine, beach romance

Atreus Rosewood's Otter Heart is a delightful exploration of love, self-discovery, and the unexpected ways life can surprise us. Set against the picturesque backdrop of Hardwood Beach on Lake Michigan, the novel weaves a narrative that is both heartwarming and introspective, inviting readers to lose themselves in the complexities of human relationships.
The story introduces us to Adam, a character who is at a crossroads in his life. After a series of failed relationships, he retreats to a lake cabin, seeking solace and a summer free from romantic entanglements. However, fate has other plans when a lost dog leads him to Mateo, a blind man whose perspective on life is refreshingly unique. The chemistry between Adam and Mateo is palpable from their first meeting, and Rosewood skillfully develops their relationship with a blend of humor, tenderness, and authenticity.
One of the most compelling aspects of Otter Heart is its exploration of the fake relationship trope. While this is a familiar theme in romance literature, Rosewood breathes new life into it by incorporating the dynamics of a blind protagonist. Mateo's blindness is not portrayed as a limitation but rather as a lens through which he perceives the world—and Adam—in a way that others cannot. This adds depth to the narrative, challenging the reader to reconsider preconceived notions about disability and attraction.
Adam's journey is one of self-discovery and vulnerability. Initially, he is portrayed as a character burdened by his past, convinced that he is incapable of maintaining a healthy relationship. His interactions with Mateo, however, gradually peel away these layers of self-doubt. The novel's grumpy/sunshine dynamic is beautifully executed, with Adam's initial reluctance and cynicism contrasting with Mateo's optimism and warmth. This interplay not only provides moments of levity but also serves as a catalyst for Adam's growth.
Mateo, on the other hand, is a character who exudes resilience and charm. Despite the challenges he faces due to his blindness, he approaches life with a sense of humor and an open heart. His relationship with his seeing-eye dog, Bessie, is particularly endearing and adds an extra layer of emotional depth to the story. Bessie is more than just a plot device; she is a symbol of loyalty and the unexpected ways in which love can manifest.
The novel's setting, Hardwood Beach, is almost a character in itself. Rosewood's vivid descriptions of the lake, the trails, and the cabin create an immersive atmosphere that enhances the romantic and introspective themes of the story. The beach serves as a sanctuary for both Adam and Mateo, a place where they can escape the pressures of their respective lives and focus on what truly matters.
In terms of character development, Rosewood excels at crafting multidimensional characters who are relatable and flawed. Adam's transformation from a man who is emotionally closed off to one who is willing to embrace love is both believable and satisfying. Similarly, Mateo's journey from self-imposed solitude to opening his heart to Adam is portrayed with sensitivity and nuance.
The novel also touches on themes of hurt/comfort, as both protagonists find solace in each other's presence. Their relationship is not without its challenges, but it is through these trials that they learn to communicate and support one another. The emotional depth of their connection is a testament to Rosewood's ability to write compelling and realistic romance.
Comparatively, Otter Heart shares thematic similarities with other contemporary romances that explore the fake relationship trope, such as Casey McQuiston's Red, White & Royal Blue and Helen Hoang's The Kiss Quotient. However, Rosewood's novel stands out due to its unique portrayal of a blind protagonist and the way it seamlessly integrates themes of disability and acceptance into the narrative.
Overall, Otter Heart is a beautifully crafted romance that will resonate with readers who appreciate stories of love, growth, and the unexpected ways in which life can change. Atreus Rosewood has created a narrative that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, making it a must-read for fans of the genre. Whether you're drawn to the idyllic setting, the engaging characters, or the emotional depth of the story, Otter Heart is a novel that promises to capture your heart and leave a lasting impression.
