No Escape
by Julie Moffett
Geek girl Lexi Carmichael thought meeting the in-laws would be easy as long as they met on neutral ground and she was fully prepared with a spreadsheet full of etiquette dos and don’ts. But unfortunately for Lexi, things don’t always turn out as she planned.
Meeting the in-laws is a daunting task even for those who are outgoing and socially capable. Since I’m neither, the prospect of meeting Slash’s parents has me scared to death. Somehow, he convinced me it would be easier meeting my in-laws for the first time at his brother’s wedding during Christmas in Italy instead of at our own church wedding in the spring. He also suggested bringing my parents along to meet them, too. That way it would reduce the chance of any unnecessary drama at our nuptials. Sounds reasonable, right? Wrong.
When Slash got busy at work, I inherited his responsibility of planning some activities for the wedding party. A mysterious Italian castle, located on an island not far from the wedding venue, and supposedly filled with puzzles and challenges no one has ever been able to solve, caught my eye. Despite being built by a highly reclusive Italian billionaire who rarely permitted anyone other than carefully selected individuals to participate in the castle challenges, my impromptu request for the wedding party to visit the island was accepted.
So, off we go to Italy with my parents in tow. I’m hoping everyone will be too busy talking to each other and enjoying the castle activities to notice me much. But the castle is not all that it seems to be, and suddenly the stakes are a lot higher than expected. Will we survive the challenge as a family, or will there be no escape?

Julie Moffett's No Escape is a delightful addition to the Lexi Carmichael series, blending humor, mystery, and a touch of romance into a captivating narrative. The book follows the adventures of Lexi Carmichael, a self-proclaimed geek girl, as she navigates the daunting task of meeting her fiancé Slash’s family for the first time. Set against the picturesque backdrop of Italy during Christmas, the story is a perfect blend of cultural exploration and thrilling mystery.
One of the most compelling aspects of No Escape is its protagonist, Lexi Carmichael. Moffett has crafted a character who is both relatable and endearing. Lexi's awkwardness in social situations and her reliance on spreadsheets to manage etiquette highlight her geeky charm. Her internal monologue is filled with humor and self-deprecation, making her a character that readers can easily root for. As she prepares to meet her in-laws, Lexi's anxiety is palpable, and her attempts to navigate the complexities of family dynamics are both amusing and heartwarming.
The theme of family is central to the narrative. Lexi's relationship with her own parents is explored in depth, providing insight into her character and her motivations. The inclusion of her parents in the trip to Italy adds an additional layer of complexity to the story. Moffett skillfully portrays the nuances of family interactions, capturing both the warmth and the tension that can arise when different families come together. The contrast between Lexi's family and Slash's family is particularly interesting, highlighting cultural differences and the challenges of blending families.
The setting of the story is another highlight. Moffett's vivid descriptions of Italy, from the bustling streets to the serene countryside, transport readers to a world of beauty and intrigue. The mysterious Italian castle, with its puzzles and challenges, serves as a perfect backdrop for the unfolding drama. The castle itself is almost a character in its own right, with its secrets and hidden dangers adding an element of suspense to the story. Moffett's attention to detail in describing the castle's architecture and the surrounding landscape enhances the immersive experience for readers.
The mystery element of the story is well-crafted, with a series of puzzles and challenges that keep readers engaged. Moffett's ability to weave together humor and suspense is evident in the way she constructs the plot. The stakes are gradually raised as the characters delve deeper into the castle's secrets, culminating in a thrilling climax that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. The resolution of the mystery is satisfying, tying together the various plot threads in a coherent and logical manner.
Character development is another strength of the book. Lexi's growth throughout the story is evident as she confronts her fears and learns to navigate the complexities of family relationships. Her interactions with Slash are particularly well-written, showcasing their chemistry and the depth of their relationship. Slash, with his enigmatic personality and unwavering support for Lexi, is a compelling character in his own right. The secondary characters, including Lexi's parents and Slash's family, are also well-developed, adding depth and richness to the story.
In comparison to other similar stories, No Escape stands out for its unique blend of humor, mystery, and romance. Moffett's writing style is engaging and accessible, making the book a pleasure to read. Fans of authors like Janet Evanovich and Meg Cabot will likely find Moffett's work appealing, as it shares a similar lighthearted tone and focus on strong, quirky female protagonists.
Overall, No Escape is a thoroughly enjoyable read that offers a perfect balance of humor, mystery, and romance. Julie Moffett has crafted a story that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, with well-developed characters and a captivating plot. Whether you're a fan of the Lexi Carmichael series or new to Moffett's work, this book is sure to delight and entertain. It's a testament to Moffett's skill as a writer that she can seamlessly blend different genres to create a story that is both unique and engaging.
