Naked
by Alexis Anne
Rule #1: Do not sleep with your best friend
Rule #2: If you sleep with your best friend, sneak out like a thief in the night and hop a plane to another continent to avoid embarrassment
Rule #3: Once safely on another continent, do not answer your phone, text messages, or email. In fact, you should burn them all
Rule #4: Pretend that night and your entire friendship never existed and start a whole new life Rule #5: Do not, under any circumstances, return to the scene of the crime…
I have kept these five simple, totally reasonable rules for the last six months, focusing all my energy on my new job at Vector Racing. A full Atlantic Ocean away from Hunter Holland and my great big terrible mistake.
I would rather end our friendship than face being friend-zoned by the handsome shortstop with magical hands that gave me a night I’ll never forget. (Seriously, I didn’t know that could be so good… *shivers*)
But now I’m in very real danger of breaking Rule #5. My boss is dragging me back across the ocean for a meeting with the Mantas where I’ll be forced to hide in the shadows and creep around every corner just in case Hunter isn’t with the team in Seattle. Which of course he will be. Why wouldn’t he?

No one knows Tilley Villanueva better than I do. Which is why I’m not mad she ghosted me after the best night of my life. I know she’s freaking out and probably has a whole set of rules she created to help deal. She’s cute like that.
That’s why I made my own set of rules. The only way to fight fire is with fire. One of these days I’m going to get Tilley alone again, and when I do, all bets are off.
*Naked is crossover novella with the The Storm Inside and Tease series. It features characters from both series but you do not have to have read them to enjoy this novella!

Alexis Anne's novella, Naked, is a delightful exploration of friendship, love, and the complexities that arise when the two intertwine. Set against the backdrop of the high-octane world of Vector Racing, the story is a captivating blend of romance and personal growth, with a dash of humor and a sprinkle of tension that keeps readers engaged from start to finish.
The narrative is driven by the protagonist, Tilley Villanueva, whose internal conflict forms the crux of the story. Tilley’s self-imposed rules, as outlined in the blurb, serve as a humorous yet poignant framework for her journey. These rules are not just a coping mechanism but also a reflection of her vulnerability and fear of losing a cherished friendship. The rules are cleverly used to highlight Tilley's internal struggle, making her a relatable and endearing character. Her decision to flee to another continent after a night of passion with her best friend, Hunter Holland, sets the stage for a story that is as much about self-discovery as it is about romance.
Hunter Holland, on the other hand, is portrayed as the quintessential best friend with a deep understanding of Tilley’s quirks and fears. His patience and unwavering belief in their connection add depth to his character. Hunter’s own set of rules, designed to counter Tilley’s, showcases his determination and the lengths he is willing to go to rekindle their relationship. This dynamic between Tilley and Hunter is one of the novella’s strengths, as it provides a balanced perspective on their relationship, allowing readers to empathize with both characters.
Themes of friendship and love are intricately woven throughout the narrative. Anne skillfully explores the delicate balance between maintaining a friendship and pursuing a romantic relationship. The fear of losing a friend is a universal theme that resonates with many, and Anne captures this sentiment with authenticity and sensitivity. The novella also touches on the theme of personal growth, as Tilley learns to confront her fears and embrace the possibility of love without the safety net of friendship.
Anne’s writing style is engaging and accessible, with a knack for witty dialogue and vivid descriptions that bring the world of Vector Racing to life. The racing backdrop adds an exciting dimension to the story, providing a unique setting that complements the fast-paced nature of Tilley and Hunter’s relationship. The author’s ability to seamlessly integrate characters from her other series, The Storm Inside and Tease, without alienating new readers is commendable. This crossover element adds depth to the novella, offering fans of Anne’s previous works a sense of continuity while still being a standalone story.
In terms of character development, Tilley’s journey is particularly noteworthy. Her evolution from a woman paralyzed by fear to someone willing to take a leap of faith is both believable and inspiring. Hunter’s steadfastness and understanding make him an ideal counterpart, and their chemistry is palpable throughout the novella. The tension between them is skillfully maintained, keeping readers invested in their story.
Comparatively, Naked shares thematic similarities with other contemporary romance novels that explore the friends-to-lovers trope. Authors like Christina Lauren and Sally Thorne have also delved into this theme, but Anne’s unique setting and character dynamics set her work apart. The novella’s brevity is both a strength and a limitation; while it allows for a quick, satisfying read, some readers may wish for a deeper exploration of certain plot points or secondary characters.
Overall, Naked is a charming and heartfelt novella that will appeal to fans of romance and those who enjoy stories about personal growth and the complexities of relationships. Alexis Anne has crafted a story that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, with characters that linger in the mind long after the final page is turned. Whether you are a longtime fan of Anne’s work or a newcomer to her stories, Naked offers a delightful escape into a world where love and friendship collide in the most unexpected ways.
