Life After Levi
by Darlene Tallman
Damien
When I was medically discharged from the military, I made my way to Possum Creek where my best friend, Levi, lived in order to bring his family as well as his girlfriend the things he bought for them that were left in our off-base apartment. After coming face-to-face with not only his daughter that he never knew about, but also her beautiful mother, I realize that maybe Levi was behind this visit.
Because there’s no way I can leave the captivating woman who’s dealt with vicious rumors ever since Levi died. Why? Because she was pregnant. Instead of running deeper into the mountains she loves, she hunkers down, raises her daughter, and finishes school in order to start a career that will help the same community that tries to shun her.
The big question is, will Emerie accept me into her life or is she content to go it alone?
Emerie
Losing Levi the way I did damaged my heart. He was my best friend, confidante, and only lover, unlike what the gossips try to spout. Thankfully, his family and mine took my back so to speak, and I have a beautiful little girl who’s the spitting image of her daddy at that age, even down to the long curly eyelashes.
While I’m sure there are those who feel I should spend the rest of my life alone, I’m only twenty with a lot of years left. So when I meet Levi’s best friend, Damien, and I feel a magnetic connection, I wonder if we can even have a relationship. Will my past hinder us? Or open doors that I never expected would be available to me.
Slow and steady is going to win this race, especially when I realize that loving Damien doesn’t diminish what I had with Levi. There’s plenty of room in my heart for him. The question is, will he be willing to take on not only me but my precocious daughter?

Darlene Tallman's Life After Levi is a poignant exploration of love, loss, and the resilience of the human spirit. Set against the backdrop of the quaint and close-knit community of Possum Creek, the novel delves into the lives of two individuals brought together by the tragic death of a mutual friend, Levi. The narrative is a heartfelt journey that examines how people cope with grief and find new beginnings amidst the shadows of the past.
The story is primarily told through the perspectives of Damien and Emerie, two characters intricately connected by their shared love for Levi. Damien, a former military man, arrives in Possum Creek to deliver Levi's belongings to his family and girlfriend, only to discover that Levi had a daughter he never knew about. This revelation sets the stage for a complex emotional journey as Damien grapples with his own feelings of loss and the unexpected bond he forms with Emerie and her daughter.
Emerie, on the other hand, is a character marked by strength and determination. Despite the vicious rumors that have plagued her since Levi's death, she remains steadfast in her resolve to build a life for herself and her daughter. Her journey is one of empowerment, as she navigates the challenges of single motherhood while pursuing a career that allows her to give back to the community that has both supported and shunned her.
Themes of love and redemption are central to the narrative. Tallman skillfully portrays the complexities of moving on after the loss of a loved one. Through Damien and Emerie's evolving relationship, the novel explores the idea that love is not a finite resource. Emerie's realization that loving Damien does not diminish her love for Levi is a powerful testament to the capacity of the human heart to heal and expand.
The character development in Life After Levi is both nuanced and compelling. Damien is portrayed as a man of honor, grappling with his own demons while striving to do right by Levi's memory. His journey from a place of duty to one of genuine affection for Emerie and her daughter is both believable and touching. Emerie, meanwhile, is a beacon of resilience. Her ability to rise above the judgment of others and carve out a life for herself and her daughter is inspiring.
Tallman's writing is evocative, capturing the essence of small-town life with its intricate web of relationships and social dynamics. The setting of Possum Creek serves as more than just a backdrop; it is a character in its own right, reflecting the themes of community and belonging that permeate the novel. The author’s attention to detail in describing the landscape and the community adds depth to the story, making it easy for readers to immerse themselves in the world she has created.
One of the standout aspects of the novel is its exploration of the impact of rumors and societal judgment. Emerie's experience with gossip and the way it shapes her life is a poignant reminder of the power of words and the importance of empathy. Tallman does not shy away from depicting the harsh realities of living in a small town where everyone knows everyone else's business, yet she also highlights the strength that can be found in familial and community support.
In comparison to other romance novels that deal with themes of loss and new beginnings, Life After Levi stands out for its emotional depth and authenticity. The novel shares thematic similarities with works like Nicholas Sparks' The Notebook and Jojo Moyes' Me Before You, both of which explore the complexities of love and loss. However, Tallman's focus on the intricacies of small-town life and the impact of community dynamics adds a unique dimension to the story.
Overall, Life After Levi is a beautifully crafted tale of love, loss, and the enduring power of the human spirit. Darlene Tallman has created a narrative that resonates with authenticity and emotional depth, offering readers a story that is both heartwarming and thought-provoking. The novel is a testament to the resilience of the human heart and the capacity for new beginnings, even in the face of profound loss.
For readers seeking a story that delves into the complexities of love and the journey of healing, Life After Levi is a must-read. Its rich character development, evocative setting, and exploration of universal themes make it a standout in the genre of contemporary romance.
