Jingle Bell Jilt
by Mindy Burbidge Strunk
Shay
I just got dumped…left at the altar! But instead of licking my wounds in the darkness of my apartment, I take the errant advice of my best friend and go on the honeymoon by myself. I mean, who does that? Apparently, me. I do that, even as the universe repeatedly shows me it is a bad idea.
Things only get worse when the rental property I’m staying at floods in the middle of the night. What am I supposed to do? It’s Christmas Eve. There is no place else to stay, except at the very handsome landlord’s place next door. Surely that won’t be a problem. It’s only for a week.
It doesn’t matter that he’s handsome, sweet, and everything my ex isn’t, I don’t need—no, I don’t want—a rebound guy.
Evan
My old college roommate and his new wife just arrived to stay in my rental property for their honeymoon. Except, my friend isn’t with her. It seems he decided not to show up for the wedding. And he says it’s because of my advice. Crap! Now I have this teary-eyed woman staying in my rental. And from what I’ve heard about her, she may not be completely stable. I should have gone back to New Hampshire for Christmas with my family.
Now, because of a broken pipe, she’s staying in my guest room. I may have neglected to mention that her ex and I are friends. But that shouldn’t matter, right? She’ll only be here until New Year’s and then it will be back to business as usual. I don’t want to be that guy. The one who gets his friend’s cast-off. Even if I think he was crazy for letting her go.
Now if only I can keep my growing attraction and lips to myself for one measly week.

Mindy Burbidge Strunk’s Jingle Bell Jilt is a delightful holiday romance that explores themes of heartbreak, unexpected connections, and the healing power of love. Set against the backdrop of a picturesque Christmas season, the novel offers a heartwarming narrative that is both engaging and emotionally resonant. Strunk’s ability to weave humor and poignancy into her storytelling makes this book a compelling read for fans of contemporary romance.
The story begins with Shay, a protagonist who finds herself in a situation that many would consider a nightmare—being left at the altar. Instead of succumbing to despair, Shay makes the bold decision to embark on her honeymoon alone. This choice sets the stage for a series of unexpected events that challenge her perceptions of love and self-worth. Shay’s journey is one of self-discovery, and Strunk does an excellent job of portraying her as a relatable and resilient character. Her decision to take the honeymoon solo is both an act of defiance and a step towards reclaiming her independence, making her a character that readers can root for.
On the other side of the narrative is Evan, a character who is initially caught in a moral dilemma. As the landlord of the rental property where Shay is staying, Evan is thrust into a situation that tests his loyalty and integrity. His internal conflict is further complicated by his growing attraction to Shay, despite knowing her connection to his friend. Strunk skillfully develops Evan’s character, portraying him as a man of depth and empathy. His struggle to balance his feelings with his sense of loyalty adds a layer of complexity to the story, making his character arc both compelling and believable.
The chemistry between Shay and Evan is palpable from their first interaction. Strunk excels in crafting dialogue that is witty and authentic, allowing the characters’ personalities to shine through. The banter between Shay and Evan is both humorous and endearing, providing a light-hearted counterbalance to the more serious themes of the novel. Their relationship evolves organically, moving from initial awkwardness to a deeper understanding and connection. This gradual development is one of the novel’s strengths, as it allows readers to become invested in their journey.
One of the standout aspects of Jingle Bell Jilt is its exploration of the theme of second chances. Both Shay and Evan are characters who have experienced disappointment and betrayal, yet they find solace and hope in each other’s company. Strunk’s portrayal of their emotional growth is nuanced and realistic, highlighting the importance of vulnerability and trust in building a meaningful relationship. The novel suggests that love can be found in the most unexpected places and that healing often comes from opening oneself up to new possibilities.
Strunk’s writing is characterized by its warmth and humor, making Jingle Bell Jilt an enjoyable read from start to finish. Her descriptive prose brings the holiday setting to life, immersing readers in a world filled with festive cheer and romance. The Christmas backdrop adds a layer of magic to the story, enhancing the overall reading experience. Strunk’s ability to capture the essence of the holiday season is reminiscent of works by authors like Debbie Macomber and Jenny Colgan, who also excel in creating heartwarming holiday tales.
In comparison to other holiday romances, Jingle Bell Jilt stands out for its well-developed characters and engaging plot. While the premise of a jilted bride finding love in an unexpected place is not entirely new, Strunk’s execution of the story is fresh and captivating. Her characters are multi-dimensional, and their emotional journeys are portrayed with sensitivity and depth. The novel’s blend of humor, romance, and holiday spirit makes it a perfect read for those looking to escape into a world of love and laughter.
Overall, Jingle Bell Jilt is a charming and uplifting novel that will resonate with readers who enjoy stories of love and redemption. Mindy Burbidge Strunk has crafted a tale that is both heartwarming and thought-provoking, reminding us of the power of love to heal and transform. Whether you’re a fan of holiday romances or simply looking for a feel-good read, this book is sure to leave you with a smile on your face and warmth in your heart.
