Summary
His Under Contract
by Fiona Murphy
Holly
As a kid with a Marine for a father, and a doormat stay-at-home mother, I didn’t have huge aspirations for my future. Maybe a teacher—working with kids, and then enjoying a summer break. However, I didn’t think I would end up a housekeeper scrubbing floors. It doesn’t matter if the floors are in a million-plus dollar condo, in one of Chicago’s most exclusive addresses. I’m still on my hands and knees for one of the most obnoxious a$$holes I’ve ever met. While even his sister thinks he’s best taken in small doses, she offers me a job I can’t refuse. I need this job, and it’s not like it’s forever, just until I’m not on the edge of poverty. Let him be the unrepentant manwhore who didn’t do repeats. It’s better for him not to be at home, so close that my stupid body goes nuts when I even think of him. It’s better this way, because he could never want me. I’m a plus size not a size two model he’s used to having. I’m safe, it doesn’t matter how badly I want him, he doesn’t want me. Does he?
Ethan
In my world, the stakes are high, million dollar high, so no, I’m not nice. I don’t say please or thank you and I never apologize. If you have a problem with that, it’s your problem not mine. I didn’t make partner at one of the biggest law firms in Chicago at only thirty-two with my winning personality. I’m on top because I make money for my clients, whether it’s a high stakes takeover, or a player getting paid every dime he’s worth. My clients come out on top. I have worked hard for the life I have, the million-dollar condo, the Ferrari in the garage, and the hottest woman on my arm and in my bed. So, if my b!tch of a new housekeeper wants to look down on me, like I give a fu*k. My one weakness, my little sister parked me with a housekeeper who is far from perfect. Okay, she has the cooking and the cleaning down. But damn, does she have an attitude and a mouth on her that smiles even when she’s insulting me. It’s a good thing she isn’t my type, or I would make her pay the best way possible. At least, I’m trying to tell my c@ck she’s not my type, only the a$$ole has had his own idea since he saw her. It won’t last long though, it never wants any woman for long. When she offers herself to me, it’s with a contract where I hold all the control, all I have to do is sign.

Fiona Murphy's His Under Contract is a contemporary romance that delves into the complexities of desire, power dynamics, and self-worth. Set against the backdrop of Chicago's elite, the novel explores the unlikely relationship between Holly, a plus-sized housekeeper, and Ethan, a high-powered attorney. At first glance, the story might seem like a classic tale of opposites attracting, but Murphy adds layers of depth and emotion that make this book a compelling read.
The narrative is driven by the dual perspectives of Holly and Ethan, allowing readers to gain insight into both characters' thoughts and motivations. This duality is crucial in understanding the internal conflicts that both characters face. Holly, shaped by her upbringing with a Marine father and a submissive mother, has limited expectations for her future. Her journey from a housekeeper to someone who dares to dream of more is both relatable and inspiring. Her self-perception as a plus-sized woman in a world that idolizes size two models adds another layer of complexity to her character. Murphy does an excellent job of portraying Holly's insecurities and her gradual journey towards self-acceptance.
On the other hand, Ethan is the epitome of a successful, yet emotionally distant, alpha male. His world is one of high stakes and high rewards, where niceties are often sacrificed for success. Ethan's character is initially hard to like, with his brusque demeanor and unapologetic arrogance. However, as the story unfolds, Murphy peels back the layers to reveal a man who is more than just his wealth and status. His interactions with Holly challenge his preconceived notions of what he wants and needs in a partner, leading to significant character development.
The chemistry between Holly and Ethan is palpable from their first interaction. Murphy skillfully builds tension through witty banter and charged encounters, making their eventual union both inevitable and satisfying. The contract that Holly offers Ethan is a clever plot device that underscores the power dynamics at play. It serves as a catalyst for both characters to confront their desires and fears, ultimately leading to personal growth and mutual understanding.
One of the standout themes in His Under Contract is the exploration of self-worth and body image. Holly's journey is a testament to the idea that beauty and desirability are not confined to societal standards. Murphy handles this theme with sensitivity and authenticity, making Holly's struggles and triumphs resonate with readers who have faced similar challenges. The novel also touches on the theme of control, both in personal relationships and professional life. Ethan's need for control is challenged by his growing feelings for Holly, leading to a more balanced and equitable relationship.
Murphy's writing style is engaging and accessible, with a good balance of dialogue and narrative. The pacing is well-executed, keeping readers invested in the characters' journeys without feeling rushed. The setting of Chicago adds a layer of sophistication and glamour, providing a fitting backdrop for the high-stakes world that Ethan inhabits.
In comparison to other contemporary romance novels, His Under Contract stands out for its nuanced characters and exploration of deeper themes. While it shares similarities with works by authors like Sylvia Day and E.L. James, particularly in its exploration of power dynamics and sensuality, Murphy's focus on self-worth and body positivity sets it apart. The novel's emphasis on character development over mere plot progression makes it a more enriching read.
Overall, His Under Contract is a captivating romance that offers more than just a love story. It's a narrative about self-discovery, empowerment, and the transformative power of love. Fiona Murphy has crafted a tale that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, making it a must-read for fans of contemporary romance. Whether you're drawn to the allure of a high-powered attorney or the journey of a woman finding her voice, this book offers something for everyone.
