His to Bedevil
by Stasia Mars
“Bedevil”
The word has a few definitions.
To torment diabolically, to possess with the devil himself, to cause confusion or doubt in.
I think it’s fitting.
Stealing from Alejandro Martinez was supposed to be an easy job, just like the rest.
It’s what I do.
I’m a bandit.
Thief.
Con artist.
Imposter.
Take your pick.
I was warned that if I were caught, I should make my peace.
He’s not just any Mob boss.
He is feared all around the world.
Worshiped by his country.
I was caught.
Snatched off the streets of Little Havana.
First, he tormented me.
Locked me away until I answered just one question of his.
Then he possessed me.
Made me fall for the devil himself.
Then he left me confused.
Gave me everything I’ve ever wanted then ripped it away from me.
Making me doubt if anything we ever had was real or if it was all part of his bedevilment.
His to Bedevil is the first book to a six-book series that can be read in any order. Alejo and Irma are a personal favorite of mine with a HEA and no cliffhangers. They’re a perfect power couple to start of the Men of the Mafia series.
Trigger warning! This may not be considered a “dark” romance, but I would say it is toeing the line. If dark romances are not for you then this book might not be either. This book is not recommended for those under the age of 18 or those who may be sensitive to certain situations. You’ve been warned!

Stasia Mars' His to Bedevil is a gripping entry into the world of dark romance, a genre that often walks the fine line between passion and peril. This novel, the first in the Men of the Mafia series, introduces readers to a world where love and danger are inextricably linked, and where the boundaries of morality are constantly tested. Mars crafts a narrative that is both thrilling and unsettling, drawing readers into a story that is as much about the psychological complexities of its characters as it is about the high-stakes world they inhabit.
The novel centers around Irma, a skilled con artist whose life takes a dramatic turn when she attempts to steal from Alejandro Martinez, a feared and revered Mob boss. The blurb sets the stage for a tale of deception and desire, and Mars delivers on this promise with a plot that is both intricate and intense. The theme of bedevilment is woven throughout the narrative, not just in the literal sense of Irma's entanglement with Alejandro, but also in the metaphorical sense of her internal struggles and the moral ambiguities she faces.
One of the standout aspects of His to Bedevil is its character development. Irma is a compelling protagonist, a woman who is both strong and vulnerable, cunning yet capable of deep emotion. Her journey from a self-assured thief to someone who is forced to confront her own desires and doubts is portrayed with nuance and depth. Mars does an excellent job of capturing Irma's internal conflict, making her a character that readers can both root for and empathize with.
Similarly, Alejandro Martinez is a complex character who defies easy categorization. As a Mob boss, he is ruthless and commanding, yet Mars also reveals layers to his personality that make him more than just a one-dimensional villain. His relationship with Irma is fraught with tension and ambiguity, and it is this dynamic that drives much of the novel's emotional impact. The chemistry between the two is palpable, and Mars skillfully navigates the power dynamics at play, creating a relationship that is as compelling as it is complicated.
The themes of power, control, and redemption are central to the novel, and Mars explores these with a deft hand. The idea of possession, both literal and metaphorical, is a recurring motif, and it is through this lens that the characters' actions and motivations are examined. The novel raises questions about the nature of love and trust, and whether true redemption is possible in a world where betrayal is commonplace. Mars does not offer easy answers, instead allowing the characters' journeys to unfold in a way that feels both authentic and thought-provoking.
In terms of style, Mars' writing is both evocative and engaging. The prose is sharp and vivid, capturing the intensity of the characters' emotions and the danger of their world. The pacing is well-executed, with moments of tension and suspense balanced by quieter, more introspective scenes. This balance keeps the reader invested in the story, eager to see how Irma and Alejandro's relationship will evolve and what challenges they will face.
Comparatively, His to Bedevil shares thematic similarities with other works in the dark romance genre, such as Pepper Winters' Monsters in the Dark series or Cora Reilly's Born in Blood Mafia Chronicles. Like these authors, Mars delves into the darker aspects of love and power, creating a narrative that is both thrilling and unsettling. However, Mars distinguishes herself with her focus on psychological complexity and character development, making His to Bedevil a standout entry in the genre.
It's important to note the trigger warning provided by the author, as the novel does explore themes and situations that may be distressing to some readers. While it may not be classified as a "dark" romance in the traditional sense, it certainly toes the line, and readers should be prepared for a story that does not shy away from difficult or controversial topics.
Overall, His to Bedevil is a captivating start to the Men of the Mafia series, offering a blend of romance, suspense, and psychological depth that is sure to appeal to fans of the genre. Stasia Mars has crafted a tale that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, with characters that linger in the mind long after the final page is turned. For those who enjoy stories that challenge the boundaries of love and morality, His to Bedevil is a must-read.
