Haunting Salem
by T.L. Reeve
My name is Simone Hadley, and I’ve been touched by the Devil.
Since the moment I decided to research and prove/disprove the events that have taken place in Turnbull Canyon, my life hasn’t been the same. Not only did I receive a grant from Cal State Long Beach, but I was also recruited by The Adventure Channel who are notorious for their shows dealing in the occult and paranormal.
For the next two years, I’ll be going to different locations trying to uncover the truths and the mysteries of each site. First up: Salem. Yep, you read that right. We’ll be investigating sites that purportedly haunted along with some of the most famous sites, like Gallows Hill and Proctor’s Ledge. Spooky, amirite?
And, if the stories about the town are true and the witches have cursed the land…
Well, at least I have my guides with me—Gaspar, Kael, and Ember.
Did I mention they’re all dead?
But, they’re not the only ones with me.
Jack, Nolan, and Owen have joined my team and if I thought my guides kept me on my toes, the addition of these three guys will rock my world as well.
Question is; by the time the first season is over, will any of us survive?

T.L. Reeve's Haunting Salem is a gripping exploration into the world of the paranormal, blending historical intrigue with supernatural elements to create a narrative that is both thrilling and thought-provoking. The book follows Simone Hadley, a character whose life takes a dramatic turn when she embarks on a journey to uncover the mysteries of haunted locations, starting with the infamous town of Salem. This premise sets the stage for a story that is as much about personal discovery as it is about the supernatural.
From the outset, Reeve establishes a strong sense of atmosphere. The choice of Salem as the first location is particularly inspired, given its rich history and association with witch trials and hauntings. The author does an excellent job of weaving historical facts with fiction, creating a setting that feels both authentic and otherworldly. The descriptions of sites like Gallows Hill and Proctor’s Ledge are vivid and evocative, immersing the reader in the eerie ambiance of the town.
Simone Hadley is a compelling protagonist. Her background as a researcher adds a layer of credibility to the narrative, and her determination to uncover the truth is both admirable and relatable. The fact that she has been "touched by the Devil" adds an intriguing dimension to her character, hinting at a past that is as mysterious as the locations she investigates. Simone's interactions with her ghostly guides—Gaspar, Kael, and Ember—are particularly fascinating. These characters, despite being dead, are well-developed and add depth to the story. They serve as both guides and foils to Simone, challenging her perceptions and pushing her to confront her own fears.
The addition of Jack, Nolan, and Owen to Simone's team introduces a dynamic that is both entertaining and complex. These characters bring their own personalities and expertise to the table, creating a group dynamic that is rich with tension and camaraderie. The interplay between the living and the dead characters is handled with skill, adding layers of intrigue and suspense to the narrative.
One of the book's strengths is its exploration of themes such as belief, fear, and the unknown. Reeve delves into the psychology of fear, examining how it shapes our perceptions and actions. The idea of curses and hauntings serves as a metaphor for the personal demons that each character must confront. This thematic depth elevates the story beyond a simple ghost tale, offering readers a narrative that is both entertaining and intellectually engaging.
In terms of pacing, Haunting Salem strikes a careful balance between action and introspection. The narrative moves swiftly, with enough twists and turns to keep readers engaged, yet it also allows for moments of reflection and character development. This balance ensures that the story remains compelling from start to finish.
Comparatively, Haunting Salem shares similarities with other works in the paranormal genre, such as Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House and Susan Hill's The Woman in Black. Like these classics, Reeve's novel uses the haunted setting as a backdrop for exploring deeper psychological themes. However, Reeve's unique blend of historical context and modern-day investigation sets it apart, offering a fresh take on the genre.
Overall, Haunting Salem is a captivating read that will appeal to fans of paranormal fiction and historical mysteries alike. T.L. Reeve has crafted a story that is rich in atmosphere, character, and theme, making it a standout addition to the genre. Whether you're a seasoned fan of ghost stories or new to the world of the supernatural, this book offers a thrilling journey into the unknown that is sure to leave a lasting impression.
