Guarded from Havoc
by Gia Cobie
I knew it was a risk venturing over to my new neighbor’s cabin during the storm.
After all, I barely knew him. All I’d learned from our chance meeting in the woods was that he was visiting the Adirondacks on a well-deserved vacation, he used to serve in the Army, and he was the most handsome man I’d ever seen.
The last part definitely made the whole knocking on a near-stranger’s door offering food and flashlights idea more appealing.
When he invited me inside, I nearly said no. But there was just something about Erik that told me I could trust him. That if I didn’t accept his offer, I’d end up regretting it.
Then four masked intruders stormed the cabin, with both of us in it. And nothing could have prepared me for what would come next.
I should have been able to defend myself from anything.
I used to be Special Forces, after all. Now, I work for one of the top private security companies in the country. But when Tatum’s life was threatened, I had no choice but to concede. To accept whatever was waiting for me after.
Waking up in the middle of the woods with an unconscious Tatum nearby wasn’t a promising start.
Finding out we’ve been dumped into the middle of a sinister game is even worse. A deadly game it’s clear we’re not supposed to survive.
But there’s no way I’m letting anything else happen to Tatum. I’m getting her out of here, no matter what it takes. And once we escape, I’m going to see her again. Because I’m not losing the first woman I could see a future with.

Gia Cobie's Guarded from Havoc is a thrilling romantic suspense novel that deftly combines elements of action, romance, and psychological intrigue. Set against the backdrop of the rugged Adirondacks, the story plunges readers into a high-stakes game of survival, where trust and instinct become the only lifelines. The novel's blurb sets the stage for an intense narrative, and Cobie delivers on this promise with a gripping tale that keeps readers on the edge of their seats.
At the heart of the story are Erik and Tatum, two characters whose lives become intertwined in the most unexpected of circumstances. Erik, a former Army serviceman, is portrayed as the quintessential wounded warrior. His character is imbued with a sense of depth and complexity that makes him both relatable and compelling. Cobie skillfully explores Erik's internal struggles, highlighting his transition from military life to civilian life and the emotional scars that accompany such a journey. His protective instincts and determination to keep Tatum safe are central to the narrative, providing a strong emotional core to the story.
Tatum, on the other hand, is a refreshing portrayal of a strong and intelligent heroine. Her background in Special Forces and her current role in a top private security company add layers to her character, showcasing her as a capable and resourceful individual. Cobie avoids the trope of the damsel in distress, instead presenting Tatum as an equal partner in the fight for survival. Her bravery and quick thinking are pivotal in navigating the dangerous situations they encounter, making her a standout character in the genre.
The chemistry between Erik and Tatum is palpable from their first encounter. Cobie expertly builds their relationship through a series of tense and intimate moments, balancing the thrill of danger with the warmth of budding romance. The forced proximity trope is used effectively here, allowing the characters to develop a deep connection amidst the chaos surrounding them. Their interactions are laced with both sweet and steamy moments, providing a satisfying blend of romance and tension.
One of the novel's strengths lies in its ability to maintain a relentless pace without sacrificing character development. The plot is tightly woven, with each twist and turn adding to the suspense. The introduction of the masked intruders and the subsequent revelation of a sinister game injects a sense of urgency and danger that propels the narrative forward. Cobie's writing is crisp and engaging, capturing the intensity of the situation while also delving into the psychological impact on the characters.
The theme of survival is central to Guarded from Havoc, and Cobie explores it through both physical and emotional lenses. The characters are forced to confront their fears and vulnerabilities, leading to moments of introspection and growth. This exploration of resilience and determination adds depth to the story, elevating it beyond a simple action-romance narrative.
In comparison to other works in the romantic suspense genre, Cobie's novel stands out for its well-rounded characters and intricate plot. Fans of authors like Nora Roberts and Suzanne Brockmann will find much to appreciate in Guarded from Havoc. Like Roberts, Cobie excels in creating strong, independent heroines who are more than capable of holding their own. Similarly, her ability to weave romance and suspense seamlessly is reminiscent of Brockmann's work, making this novel a must-read for fans of the genre.
Moreover, the novel's setting in the Adirondacks adds an atmospheric quality to the story. The remote and rugged landscape serves as both a backdrop and a character in its own right, amplifying the sense of isolation and danger. Cobie's descriptive prose brings the setting to life, immersing readers in the wilderness and heightening the stakes of the narrative.
In conclusion, Guarded from Havoc is a captivating read that combines action, romance, and suspense in a way that is both thrilling and emotionally resonant. Gia Cobie has crafted a story that is as much about the power of human connection as it is about survival. With its well-drawn characters, gripping plot, and satisfying resolution, this novel is sure to leave a lasting impression on readers. Whether you're a fan of romantic suspense or simply looking for a compelling story, Guarded from Havoc is a book that should not be missed.
