Frederick
by Taylor Rylan
What happens when your fated One happens to be someone you’re investigating?
Frederick Ainsworth’s life is, for lack of a better word, mundane. Needing something to occupy his time, he joins the Council as an enforcer, with the small hope that he’d have a better chance of finding that perfect someone to spend the rest of eternity with too. So far, nothing. That is, until he’s sent to Amherst on assignment. When new information about some of the warlocks from Italy is discovered, their involvement in their coven’s trafficking needs to be proven or denied.
Dominic DeLuca is simply old and tired. Well, he feels it. Just shy of three centuries, he is pretty set in his ways, and the last thing he expected was a chance at a new start in a different coven. When the Paranormal Council discovered just how involved his coven master was in human trafficking and drugs, he assumed he would go down with the coven. When his body reacts to the handsome warlock enforcer who is suddenly in Amherst to ask some follow-up questions, he’s elated. That is, until he receives a less-than-warm welcome from him.
Frederick’s first reaction is frustration at being gifted a dishonest One. But once his mind clears, he quickly realizes that he should have known better, and he owes the gorgeous warlock an apology for the public snub. Will Dominic forgive him though?
Frederick is Book Fifteen in the Paranormal Council Enforcers series. Each book in this series will focus on a different couple, but these books are not standalones and should be read in order as there is an ongoing backstory that won’t be resolved quickly. This is a fated mate story in an MPreg world, and there will be at least one baby. You should expect all the normal shenanigans, and remember that sometimes even fated mates need a little help.

Taylor Rylan's Frederick, the fifteenth installment in the Paranormal Council Enforcers series, is a compelling addition to the world of fated mates and supernatural intrigue. This novel, set in a richly imagined universe where warlocks, covens, and councils govern the paranormal realm, offers readers a blend of romance, mystery, and fantasy that is both engaging and thought-provoking.
At the heart of the story is Frederick Ainsworth, a warlock whose life has been marked by routine and a longing for something more. His decision to join the Council as an enforcer is driven by a desire for purpose and the hope of finding his fated mate. This quest for connection is a central theme in the novel, reflecting a universal human desire for companionship and belonging. Rylan skillfully portrays Frederick's internal struggle between duty and personal longing, making him a relatable and sympathetic character.
Dominic DeLuca, the other half of this fated pairing, is a character who embodies resilience and the weariness of age. At nearly three centuries old, Dominic's life has been shaped by the complexities of coven politics and the shadow of his coven master's criminal activities. His initial reaction to Frederick is one of hope, tempered by the fear of rejection. This dynamic between hope and fear is a recurring motif in the novel, highlighting the vulnerability inherent in opening oneself to love.
The relationship between Frederick and Dominic is the novel's emotional core. Rylan explores the concept of fated mates with nuance, acknowledging that even destined relationships require effort and understanding. The initial misunderstanding and public snub between the two characters serve as a catalyst for growth, forcing Frederick to confront his assumptions and biases. This moment of conflict is crucial, as it underscores the importance of communication and forgiveness in any relationship.
Rylan's world-building is another standout aspect of Frederick. The intricate details of the paranormal society, from the governing Council to the dynamics within covens, create a vivid backdrop for the story. The inclusion of elements such as human trafficking and drug involvement adds a layer of realism and urgency to the narrative, grounding the fantastical elements in real-world issues. This blend of fantasy and reality is a hallmark of Rylan's writing, allowing readers to immerse themselves in a world that feels both familiar and fantastical.
One of the novel's strengths is its exploration of themes such as redemption and second chances. Dominic's journey from a coven embroiled in criminal activities to a new beginning in Amherst is a testament to the power of change and the possibility of redemption. Rylan handles these themes with sensitivity, offering a narrative that is both hopeful and realistic. The idea that even those with a troubled past can find love and acceptance is a powerful message that resonates throughout the book.
In comparison to other works in the genre, Frederick stands out for its character-driven narrative and emotional depth. While many paranormal romances focus primarily on the supernatural elements, Rylan places equal emphasis on character development and interpersonal relationships. This balance is reminiscent of authors like J.R. Ward and Nalini Singh, who also excel in creating complex characters within richly detailed worlds.
However, it is important to note that Frederick is not a standalone novel. As part of an ongoing series, it requires readers to be familiar with the overarching backstory and character dynamics established in previous books. This interconnectedness is both a strength and a limitation, as it allows for a deeper exploration of the world but may be challenging for new readers to navigate.
Overall, Frederick is a captivating addition to the Paranormal Council Enforcers series, offering a blend of romance, mystery, and fantasy that is sure to delight fans of the genre. Rylan's ability to weave complex themes into a compelling narrative is a testament to her skill as a storyteller. For readers seeking a story that combines the allure of the supernatural with the depth of human emotion, Frederick is a must-read.
In conclusion, Taylor Rylan's Frederick is a testament to the enduring appeal of fated mate stories, offering a fresh take on the genre with its focus on character development and thematic depth. Whether you're a longtime fan of the series or new to Rylan's work, this novel promises an engaging and emotionally resonant reading experience.
