Forbidden
by K.T. Yarrow
It’s one thing to see other people’s fates. It’s another thing entirely to accept your own.
Ira Faer has a secret. As a prophet in the Paladin Guild, it’s his job to report his visions to his superiors. The trouble is, his visions these days would get a lot of good people killed—including himself. He can’t tell them he’s been seeing rebel paladins and demons working together, and he certainly can’t tell them about the visions of himself and the sinfully hot halfling demon named Wolf. So he lies, hoping they won’t discover his transgression.
But his careful balancing act is disrupted when he has a vision of Wolf being attacked by paladins. Unable to stand by and let it happen, Ira rushes to intervene and brings his whole world crashing down around him.
Wolf has been around for a very long time. He spends his nights tending the bar at the demon club, In Extremis, as he has for the last hundred years. It’s a monotonous slog from one night to the next, until Ira barges into his life. He can’t believe a prophet of the Lord would ever care about him, but Ira doesn’t just care. Ira wants him, red eyes and all.
Under Ira’s careful and sometimes cryptic direction, old friends and new will take steps toward the future Ira has been seeing, but it won’t be easy. Unrest grows in the Paladin Guild, and they won’t let one of their precious prophets leave the fold so easily.

K.T. Yarrow’s Forbidden is a compelling exploration of destiny, identity, and the complex interplay between duty and desire. Set in a world where prophets and demons coexist in a delicate balance, the novel delves into the life of Ira Faer, a prophet whose visions are both a gift and a curse. The narrative is rich with tension, as Ira grapples with the moral quandary of his prophetic duties and the personal stakes that threaten to unravel his carefully constructed life.
From the outset, Yarrow establishes a world that is both familiar and fantastical. The Paladin Guild, with its rigid hierarchy and strict adherence to duty, serves as a backdrop for Ira’s internal conflict. As a prophet, Ira is expected to report his visions to his superiors, but the nature of his recent visions—depicting alliances between rebel paladins and demons—puts him in an untenable position. The stakes are further heightened by his visions of Wolf, a halfling demon whose fate becomes inextricably linked with Ira’s own.
The character development in Forbidden is one of its standout features. Ira is a deeply nuanced character, torn between his obligations and his burgeoning feelings for Wolf. His internal struggle is portrayed with sensitivity and depth, making him a relatable and sympathetic protagonist. Yarrow skillfully navigates Ira’s journey of self-discovery, as he learns to reconcile his prophetic abilities with his personal desires. The tension between duty and desire is a recurring theme, and Ira’s journey is a testament to the power of personal agency in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.
Wolf, on the other hand, provides a fascinating counterpoint to Ira. As a halfling demon, he embodies the duality of the novel’s world—caught between the human and demon realms. His initial skepticism about Ira’s intentions gradually gives way to a deep, mutual understanding, and their relationship becomes the emotional core of the story. Wolf’s character is imbued with a sense of timelessness, having lived for centuries, yet he finds himself invigorated by Ira’s presence. This dynamic adds a layer of complexity to the narrative, as both characters must navigate their own identities while confronting external threats.
The themes of Forbidden are intricately woven into the fabric of the story. The concept of fate versus free will is explored through Ira’s visions and the choices he makes. Yarrow raises thought-provoking questions about the nature of destiny and whether it is possible to alter one’s path. The novel also touches on themes of acceptance and belonging, as Ira and Wolf both struggle to find their place in a world that views them with suspicion and fear.
Yarrow’s writing is both evocative and immersive, drawing readers into a world that is richly detailed and vividly imagined. The pacing is well-balanced, with moments of introspection interspersed with action-packed sequences that keep the narrative moving forward. The tension builds steadily, culminating in a climactic confrontation that tests the limits of Ira’s resolve and the strength of his bond with Wolf.
In comparison to other works in the fantasy genre, Forbidden stands out for its focus on character-driven storytelling. While it shares thematic elements with novels like Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses series, particularly in its exploration of forbidden love and complex moral dilemmas, Yarrow’s novel is distinguished by its emphasis on the internal struggles of its protagonists. The interplay between prophecy and personal choice is reminiscent of works by authors like Cassandra Clare, yet Yarrow brings a unique voice and perspective to the genre.
Overall, Forbidden is a captivating and thought-provoking read that will resonate with fans of fantasy and romance alike. K.T. Yarrow has crafted a story that is both entertaining and emotionally resonant, with characters that linger in the mind long after the final page is turned. The novel’s exploration of identity, destiny, and the power of love in the face of adversity makes it a standout addition to the fantasy genre.
For readers seeking a story that combines rich world-building with deeply personal stakes, Forbidden is a must-read. Its blend of action, romance, and philosophical inquiry ensures that it will appeal to a wide audience, while its nuanced characters and intricate plot make it a rewarding experience for those who appreciate depth and complexity in their fiction.
