Falling for Finn
by Brooke Fox
Falling for Finn isn’t part of my plan.
He’s older, moody, and complains about everything I do.
His family flies me three thousand miles out to their orchard farm in Vermont to do a painting for their centennial celebration. It’s an opportunity of a lifetime to do a piece for the Bennetts, but I don’t expect my clients’ grandson to rope me into a fake dating scheme.
When his ex-girlfriend shows up expecting to sleep in the cottage I’m currently in, I volunteer to stay with Finn to keep up appearances that we’re together.
Except there’s only one bed, and I refuse to sleep on his small couch.
As my reluctant tour guide, he’s forced to show me around while pretending we’re in love. Painting is my life and this job will bring me even more in the future, so I suck it up and deal with Mr. Grumpy.
And since he’s hell-bent on being insufferable, I won’t make this easy on him either.
But then he goes and falls for me, too.
Falling for Finn was previously published as “The Fall of Us” by Kennedy Fox. It’s been re-edited and includes bonus content.

Falling for Finn by Brooke Fox is a heartwarming contemporary romance novel that dives deep into the themes of friendship, love, and self-discovery. With its charming characters and engaging narrative, the book offers a fresh perspective on the dynamics of transforming long-standing friendships into romantic relationships. Brooke Fox, through a gentle and evocative prose, captures the reader’s attention from the very beginning, setting up a story that’s not only romantic but also deeply relatable.
The novel introduces us to Anna, a young and talented graphic designer, who finds herself at a crossroads in life, both professionally and personally. Her life takes a particularly dramatic turn when she comes back to her hometown and reconnects with her childhood best friend, Finn. Finn, the titular character, is depicted as a dependable, kind-hearted man struggling with his own vulnerabilities, working to keep his family's bakery afloat after his parents' retirement. The comfortable ease between him and Anna highlights their profound bond—a foundation that Fox uses skillfully to build a believable romantic trajectory.
The narrative thrives on its realistic portrayal of relationships. It’s not just the simmering romantic tension between Anna and Finn that captivates the reader but also their individual journeys of self-discovery. Anna’s character growth, from a somewhat unsure protagonist to a decisive individual secure in her affection for Finn, is written with a lot of compassion and insight. Finn, on his end, must navigate the challenges of acknowledging his feelings for Anna, all while battling the fear of ruining their friendship. This central conflict is explored with sensitivity, steering clear of clichéd pitfalls.
Brooke Fox’s writing shines particularly in the nuanced way she handles emotional conflicts. The dialogues between Anna and Finn are heartfelt and often laden with a tension that pushes them to confront their deepest fears and desires. The supporting characters add depth to the story, from Finn’s quirky sister who provides comic relief to Anna’s mentor, who helps her navigate her career dilemmas. Each character is well-fleshed out, contributing to the story’s depth without overshadowing the main plot.
The setting of the novel, a picturesque small town, acts almost as a character in itself. Fox vividly describes the bakery, the heart of many of the book’s pivotal scenes, with such detail that one can almost smell the pastries baking. The town with its close-knit community acts as a catalyst for Anna and Finn's relationship, providing both pressure and support.
While the premise of childhood friends falling in love might not be groundbreaking, Fox’s treatment of the theme is refreshing. The transition from friends to lovers is fraught with risk and it’s this element of risk that keeps the readers hooked. The pacing of the story is just right, with the right amount of twists to keep the narrative engaging without feeling contrived.
However, it is also worth noting that some readers might find the plot a bit predictable. Despite its emotional depth and engaging main characters, the story does follow a relatively formulaic path typical of romance novels. Yet, it is Fox’s ability to evoke genuine emotion and create tangible chemistry between her characters that elevates the story, making it a delightful read.
In essence, Falling for Finn is more than just a simple romance. It is a celebration of the beauty and complexity of human connections. It examines the courage it takes to confront one’s feelings and the joy and pain intertwined in love and friendship. Brooke Fox does a commendable job of creating a narrative that is as touching as it is sincere, making this book a recommended read for those who enjoy realistic, character-driven romance novels. For readers looking for a cozy, heartfelt story that explores meaningful themes with grace and humor, Falling for Finn should definitely be on the reading list.
