Don't Trust the Cowboy
by Sandy Appleyard
A black sheep. A runaway. The American dream. And an old friend that reappears from thin air…bringing Billy’s past with him…setting his future with Piper to a grinding halt.
The stain on my secondhand blouse taunts me as I drive to Billy Barnes’s ranch. He hasn’t called me for an interview, despite my numerous messages. I’ve been away at school long enough that I’ve been removed from this small town. Word is that Billy Barnes went away, too, to the military. Came back a different man, not fit for a woman. Doesn’t matter, since my only interest is work. He’s put off by me, but I don’t give up. Next thing I know, he’s following me like some lunatic, until he learns my secret, and then we’re both in a heap of trouble. He’s not the only one with nightmares. He’s not the only one living a nightmare, either. But then he looks at me with something in his eyes that I’ve never seen before. When I learn that it’s love it’s too late.

My brother Cassidy points out Piper Charlton’s resume from a stack on my table. But I grumble, as he shares points about her, and the fact that she’s the last thing I need. When she shows up unannounced, I’m not impressed. The second trip is plain ballsy, but I’m too exhausted to fight, and I end up doing two things I’ll later regret. Her brains, her drive, and her heart are what open my eyes to things I would have never cared about before in a million years. She’s more intuitive than what’s good for her, and she finds out a certain something about me that I’ve never told a soul. I never meant for Piper to be a victim. And I’ll be damned if she ends up that way. That’s why I have to stop it before it starts. I just hope that I don’t break her heart in the process…or my own heart, for that matter.

Sandy Appleyard's Don't Trust the Cowboy is a compelling narrative that intertwines the themes of redemption, love, and the quest for personal freedom against the backdrop of a small-town setting. The novel is a poignant exploration of two individuals, Piper Charlton and Billy Barnes, who are both haunted by their pasts and are seeking solace in the present. Through its engaging storyline and well-crafted characters, the book offers readers a journey of emotional depth and introspection.
At the heart of the novel is Piper Charlton, a determined and resilient young woman who returns to her hometown after completing her education. Her character is a refreshing portrayal of strength and vulnerability, as she navigates the challenges of finding employment and confronting her past. Piper's persistence in securing a job at Billy Barnes's ranch is not just a testament to her tenacity but also a reflection of her desire to carve out a space for herself in a world that seems to have moved on without her. Her character is relatable and inspiring, embodying the struggles many face when trying to reconcile their past with their aspirations for the future.
Billy Barnes, on the other hand, is a complex character whose experiences in the military have left him a changed man. His initial reluctance to engage with Piper is indicative of his internal struggles and the walls he has built around himself. However, as the story unfolds, Billy's character development is both profound and heartwarming. The transformation from a guarded and reticent individual to someone capable of love and vulnerability is beautifully portrayed. Appleyard skillfully delves into Billy's psyche, revealing the layers of trauma and resilience that define him.
The dynamic between Piper and Billy is central to the narrative, and Appleyard masterfully captures the nuances of their evolving relationship. The chemistry between them is palpable, yet it is their shared understanding of pain and healing that truly binds them. The author does not shy away from depicting the complexities of love, especially when it is intertwined with past traumas. This adds a layer of authenticity to their relationship, making it both believable and compelling.
One of the standout aspects of Don't Trust the Cowboy is its exploration of the theme of trust. Both Piper and Billy have been betrayed by their pasts, and their journey towards trusting each other is fraught with challenges. The title itself is a clever nod to the skepticism that both characters harbor, not just towards each other but also towards the world around them. Appleyard uses this theme to delve into the broader question of how one can learn to trust again after being hurt, a theme that resonates deeply with readers.
In terms of writing style, Appleyard's prose is both evocative and accessible. She has a knack for creating vivid imagery that brings the small-town setting to life, making it almost a character in its own right. The dialogue is crisp and realistic, capturing the essence of the characters and their interactions. The pacing of the novel is well-balanced, with moments of tension and introspection seamlessly woven together to create a narrative that is both engaging and thought-provoking.
Comparatively, Don't Trust the Cowboy shares thematic similarities with other contemporary romance novels that explore the intersection of love and personal growth. For instance, fans of Nicholas Sparks or Jojo Moyes may find Appleyard's work appealing due to its focus on character-driven storytelling and emotional depth. However, what sets this novel apart is its unique blend of romance and the exploration of personal demons, making it a standout in its genre.
Overall, Don't Trust the Cowboy is a beautifully crafted novel that offers a rich tapestry of emotions and themes. Sandy Appleyard has created a story that is both heartwarming and thought-provoking, inviting readers to reflect on their own experiences of love, trust, and redemption. The novel's impact lies in its ability to resonate with readers on a personal level, making it a memorable addition to the contemporary romance genre.
For those seeking a story that goes beyond the conventional romance narrative, Don't Trust the Cowboy is a must-read. It is a testament to the power of love and the resilience of the human spirit, offering a narrative that is as uplifting as it is poignant. Sandy Appleyard has truly crafted a gem with this novel, and it is sure to leave a lasting impression on anyone who picks it up.
