Desired By the Lumberjack

LAUREL
I shouldn’t have been out on the road that night. I knew it, my co-workers knew it. My mother definitely knew it. But when I believe in something, I will stop at nothing to do what needs to be done. And the shelter I interned at last summer needs the charitable donation my boss promised to make. At least until he decided that a ski trip was more important and took off without signing the final paperwork.
Which is why I was creeping up an unfamiliar mountain road, went around a curve and slid into a tree. I’m fine, but my car isn’t, and help is a long, cold, hike away.
Until a man pulls up and offers me a ride. He’s big, grouchy and irritated, but there’s a warmth hiding behind his defenses. And maybe, just maybe, the heat I see in his eyes means something I never expected.
MERRITT
I came to this mountain to get away from people and their constant need to hurry through their lives. All the racing around and constant pressure chased me away from the city to the peace of a home surrounded by nature.
Finding a stranded woman in the middle of a snowstorm, I do the decent thing and offer her a lift into town. But when she has nowhere to stay and refuses to leave without accomplishing the task that brought her here, I find myself opening up my own home to this stranger.
It’s supposed to be a temporary situation. Wait out the storm, get her car fixed, and send her on her way. The only problem is, the more time we spend together, the less I want her to leave.
I’m nobody’s hero. But maybe, just maybe, I could be hers.

Kelsea Fox's Desired By the Lumberjack is a contemporary romance that deftly combines the allure of a rugged, isolated setting with the warmth of unexpected companionship. The novel explores themes of self-discovery, the healing power of nature, and the transformative potential of love. Through the eyes of its protagonists, Laurel and Merritt, Fox crafts a narrative that is both heartwarming and introspective, inviting readers to ponder the complexities of human connection.
At the heart of the story is Laurel, a determined and passionate woman who finds herself stranded on a snowy mountain road. Her predicament is the result of her unwavering commitment to a cause she believes in—a charitable donation for a shelter she interned at. This initial setup immediately establishes Laurel as a character driven by purpose and compassion, traits that resonate throughout the novel. Her journey is not just a physical one, but also an emotional and psychological exploration of her own values and desires.
In contrast, Merritt is a man who has retreated from the hustle and bustle of city life to find solace in the tranquility of nature. His decision to live in isolation is a response to the pressures of modern life, and his character embodies the theme of seeking peace in simplicity. Merritt's initial grouchiness and reluctance to engage with Laurel are indicative of his protective barriers, yet Fox skillfully reveals the warmth and vulnerability beneath his rugged exterior. As the story unfolds, Merritt's character development is marked by his gradual openness to Laurel's presence and the realization that he may have been missing something vital in his self-imposed solitude.
The dynamic between Laurel and Merritt is a central focus of the novel, and Fox excels in portraying their evolving relationship. The initial tension between them, born from their contrasting personalities and circumstances, gradually gives way to mutual understanding and attraction. The author captures the nuances of their interactions with a deft hand, allowing their chemistry to build naturally and believably. The progression from strangers to confidants is both satisfying and engaging, drawing readers into their world and making them invested in the outcome of their relationship.
One of the standout aspects of Desired By the Lumberjack is its vivid setting. The mountain landscape is not just a backdrop but a character in its own right, influencing the mood and tone of the story. Fox's descriptions of the snow-covered terrain, the cozy warmth of Merritt's cabin, and the serene beauty of the natural surroundings create an immersive atmosphere that enhances the emotional depth of the narrative. The setting serves as a metaphor for the characters' internal journeys, reflecting their struggles and growth as they navigate their feelings for each other.
In terms of themes, the novel delves into the idea of finding one's true self through unexpected circumstances. Laurel's determination to fulfill her mission, despite the obstacles she faces, speaks to the theme of perseverance and the importance of staying true to one's values. Merritt's journey, on the other hand, highlights the theme of opening oneself up to new possibilities and the healing power of connection. Together, their stories illustrate the transformative potential of love and the ways in which it can lead to personal growth and fulfillment.
Fox's writing style is both engaging and accessible, making Desired By the Lumberjack a compelling read for fans of contemporary romance. The dialogue is natural and authentic, capturing the essence of the characters' personalities and emotions. The pacing of the story is well-balanced, allowing for moments of introspection and character development while maintaining a sense of momentum that keeps readers invested in the outcome.
For readers who enjoy similar stories, Desired By the Lumberjack can be compared to works by authors like Nora Roberts and Debbie Macomber, who also excel in crafting romances set against picturesque backdrops with richly developed characters. However, Fox brings her own unique voice to the genre, offering a fresh perspective on familiar themes and tropes.
In conclusion, Desired By the Lumberjack is a beautifully crafted romance that explores the complexities of love, self-discovery, and the healing power of nature. Through its well-drawn characters and evocative setting, the novel offers a poignant and satisfying reading experience that will resonate with fans of the genre. Kelsea Fox has created a story that is both heartwarming and thought-provoking, making it a worthy addition to any romance reader's collection.
