Summary
Darkened Wings
by Mazzy J. March
I have to protect my raven at all costs. She’s not like the others. And my parents said the world would hunt me down for her feathers.
Life was easy when they were alive. They helped to protect me from the hunters, but now that they are gone, there is nothing left. The bank took everything, and I have no money to my name. My life was hopeless until someone shows up, claiming there’s a safe place to go.
A place where I can learn to protect myself from everyone. And that’s what I intend to do, shield myself from the world at any cost.
Except something is happening here too. There is an underlying tension at this school, and a lot of guys roaming the halls at night for some reason. But I don't need to think about them. No matter how much my body tends to sway toward them of its own accord.
I’ve got better things to do…like find out who keeps sending me threatening notes and leaving dead birds at my door.
All I have to do is survive this academy and get out of here…alive.

Darkened Wings by Mazzy J. March is a captivating blend of fantasy and suspense that immerses readers in a world where danger lurks in the shadows and the bonds between humans and mystical creatures are tested. The story centers around a young protagonist who must navigate the treacherous waters of survival in a world that seems intent on tearing her apart, all while protecting her unique raven—a creature that symbolizes both her past and her future.
The narrative begins with a poignant reflection on loss and vulnerability. The protagonist, whose name is not revealed in the blurb, finds herself alone after the death of her parents, who were her protectors against the hunters that seek her raven's feathers. This loss sets the stage for a gripping tale of resilience and self-discovery. March's writing shines in these early chapters, as she deftly captures the protagonist's sense of hopelessness and isolation. The emotional weight of her circumstances is palpable, making it easy for readers to empathize with her plight.
As the protagonist is introduced to a new academy—a supposed safe haven—March skillfully builds an atmosphere of intrigue and tension. The academy is not just a place of learning; it becomes a character in its own right, filled with secrets and an undercurrent of danger. The author expertly weaves in elements of mystery, particularly through the threatening notes and dead birds that plague the protagonist. These motifs serve to heighten the stakes and keep readers on the edge of their seats, eager to uncover the truth behind the ominous occurrences.
The theme of protection is central to the story. The protagonist's determination to shield her raven reflects a deeper struggle to protect herself from the world that has already caused her so much pain. This theme resonates throughout the narrative, as she grapples with her own vulnerabilities while learning to harness her strengths. March explores the complexities of self-defense—not just in a physical sense but also emotionally and psychologically. The protagonist's journey toward empowerment is both inspiring and relatable, making her a compelling character to root for.
Character development is another strong point in Darkened Wings. The protagonist evolves from a frightened girl into a more self-assured individual, learning to navigate the complexities of her new environment. The supporting characters, particularly the enigmatic boys who roam the halls at night, add layers to the story. Each character is distinct, with their own motivations and secrets, which enriches the narrative. March does an excellent job of balancing the protagonist's internal struggles with her interactions with others, creating a dynamic that feels authentic and engaging.
The romantic tension that simmers beneath the surface adds another layer of complexity to the story. The protagonist's attraction to the boys, despite her initial resolve to focus solely on her survival, creates a compelling conflict. March navigates this tension with finesse, allowing the protagonist's feelings to develop naturally while maintaining the urgency of her situation. This interplay between desire and duty is reminiscent of other young adult fantasy novels, such as Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas or The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater, where the protagonists must balance their personal desires with the weight of their responsibilities.
March's prose is both lyrical and evocative, painting vivid imagery that brings the world to life. The descriptions of the academy, the raven, and the ominous atmosphere are particularly striking, allowing readers to fully immerse themselves in the setting. The pacing of the story is well-executed, with a balance of action and introspection that keeps the reader engaged. Just when the tension seems to peak, March introduces new twists that propel the narrative forward, ensuring that the reader remains invested until the very last page.
One of the most impactful aspects of Darkened Wings is its exploration of grief and healing. The protagonist's journey is not just about survival; it is also about coming to terms with her loss and finding a way to move forward. March handles this theme with sensitivity, allowing readers to witness the protagonist's growth as she learns to embrace her past while forging her own identity. This emotional depth elevates the story beyond a simple fantasy tale, making it a poignant exploration of resilience in the face of adversity.
In conclusion, Darkened Wings by Mazzy J. March is a beautifully crafted novel that combines elements of fantasy, mystery, and romance into a compelling narrative. With its strong themes of protection, self-discovery, and the complexities of grief, the book resonates on multiple levels. The protagonist's journey is both thrilling and heart-wrenching, making it a must-read for fans of young adult fantasy. March's ability to create a rich, immersive world filled with relatable characters and emotional depth sets this book apart in a crowded genre. Readers looking for a story that balances action with introspection will find themselves captivated by the pages of Darkened Wings.
