Can I?
by Monica Walters
Milana Semien knows how it feels to be alienated and abandoned when she needs love and support the most. One decision made in the heat of the moment leads to events that are irreversible, leaving the family reeling from emotions of anger and grief. She’s ostracized because of it, even by her own mother. Depression takes over, because she wants her relationships with her family members to be restored. In the midst of her sadness and self-reflection period, she meets the man she knows could possibly change her life, but she isn’t sure if she will ever be able to give of herself again.
Game tester, Ferris Botley, knows what he wants and after meeting the rodeo princess, Milana Semien, he knows she’s the one. He’s smitten at first sight. He realizes she’s young and lacks some maturity, but he’s willing to endure it because he feels her heart. However, when her past is revealed, he doesn’t know if he can get past it. Her reputation is tarnished, and the drama resulting from her actions is still in her present. Drama is a major turn off for him, but there’s something about Milana he can’t shake.
There are plenty of valid reasons why Ferris should walk away and not look back, but there are also plenty of reasons he should give Milana the love he knows she deserves. Milana is hoping she can convince Ferris that she’s the woman he’s supposed to be with, despite the drama that is out of her control. Will Milana melt the ice around Ferris’s heart, or will he leave her and her drama for someone else to deal with?

Monica Walters' novel Can I? is a poignant exploration of love, redemption, and the complexities of human relationships. The story centers around Milana Semien, a young woman grappling with the consequences of a hasty decision that has left her alienated from her family and struggling with depression. Walters deftly captures the emotional turmoil that Milana experiences, painting a vivid picture of a woman caught between her past mistakes and the hope for a brighter future.
Milana's character is intricately developed, and Walters does an exceptional job of portraying her internal conflict. The reader is drawn into Milana's world, feeling her pain and yearning for her redemption. Her journey is one of self-discovery and healing, and Walters handles this with sensitivity and depth. The theme of alienation is prevalent throughout the novel, as Milana is ostracized not only by society but also by her own family. This adds a layer of complexity to her character, making her both relatable and sympathetic.
Enter Ferris Botley, a game tester who becomes enamored with Milana upon their first meeting. Ferris is a character who knows what he wants, and his initial attraction to Milana is both immediate and intense. Walters skillfully contrasts Ferris's straightforward nature with Milana's more complicated emotional state, creating a dynamic interplay between the two characters. Ferris's struggle with Milana's past and the drama that surrounds her is a central conflict in the novel, and Walters explores this with nuance and insight.
The relationship between Milana and Ferris is the heart of the novel, and Walters excels in depicting the push and pull between them. Ferris is initially hesitant to get involved with Milana due to her tarnished reputation and the ongoing drama in her life. However, there is an undeniable connection between them that Ferris cannot ignore. Walters captures this tension beautifully, creating a compelling narrative that keeps the reader engaged.
One of the strengths of Can I? is its exploration of the theme of redemption. Milana's journey is one of seeking forgiveness and acceptance, both from her family and herself. Walters delves into the complexities of familial relationships, highlighting the pain of estrangement and the longing for reconciliation. The novel raises important questions about forgiveness and whether it is possible to move beyond past mistakes. This theme is universal and resonates deeply with readers, making Milana's story both powerful and relatable.
Walters' writing is both evocative and engaging, drawing the reader into the emotional landscape of the characters. Her prose is rich with detail, bringing the setting and characters to life. The dialogue is authentic and captures the essence of each character, adding depth to the narrative. Walters' ability to convey emotion through her writing is one of the novel's standout features, making Can I? a compelling read from start to finish.
In comparison to other novels that explore similar themes, such as Colleen Hoover's It Ends with Us or Nicholas Sparks' The Notebook, Walters' Can I? stands out for its focus on the internal struggles of its protagonist. While Hoover and Sparks often emphasize the romantic aspects of their stories, Walters delves deeper into the psychological and emotional aspects of her characters. This adds a layer of complexity to the narrative, making it a thought-provoking read.
Overall, Can I? is a beautifully written novel that explores the intricacies of love, forgiveness, and redemption. Monica Walters has crafted a story that is both heart-wrenching and hopeful, leaving a lasting impact on the reader. The novel's themes are universal, and its characters are richly developed, making it a must-read for anyone who enjoys stories of personal growth and emotional depth. Walters' ability to capture the human experience in all its complexity is what makes Can I? a standout novel in its genre.
