Better Left Unsaid
by Dani Ryan
I propose we stop referring to it as friends with benefits and say it like it is—a recipe for disaster.
See, it all started when I confessed a little something to my best friend. His response? Definitely something unexpected. In the best way possible. The next thing I knew I was proposing we be friends with benefits.
The rules were simple:
Nothing changes in terms of our friendship.
No one finds out about us.
Emotions are completely out of the equation.
That becomes hard when suddenly emotions are stuck smack dab in the middle of the equation. How could I not have seen things clearly?
After all this time I’m noticing the way Dominic Deluca makes me feel (and not just during the benefits part of our relationship), how he’s always there for me, and the fact that he knows me better than I know myself. Then there’s my daughter. He’s great with her, of course, and she loves him. But he’s so much more than her uncle Dom.
Things have always been complicated between Dom and I, and being friends with benefits only made it more so. I know it would be easier to forget this ever happened and go back to the way things were, but it won’t be the same. Nothing will ever be the same. As much as we didn’t want them to, things changed.
I have to be honest with myself—and him. I love him. I think I’ve always loved him, and you’d probably agree that’s not better left unsaid.
Better Left Unsaid is a friends-to-lovers, single mom, friends with benefits, secret relationship, he’s always loved her, slow burn, angst and banter-filled romantic comedy with no third-act breakup and a happily ever after.

Dani Ryan's Better Left Unsaid is a delightful exploration of the complexities inherent in the friends-to-lovers trope, wrapped in the comforting embrace of a romantic comedy. The novel deftly navigates the intricate dynamics of friendship, love, and the often blurry lines that separate the two. With a narrative that is both engaging and relatable, Ryan crafts a story that is as much about personal growth as it is about romance.
At the heart of the novel is the relationship between the protagonist and her best friend, Dominic Deluca. The premise is simple yet compelling: a friends-with-benefits arrangement that inevitably leads to deeper emotional entanglements. The blurb sets the stage for a journey filled with humor, angst, and the inevitable realization of love that has been simmering beneath the surface all along.
One of the novel's strengths lies in its character development. The protagonist is a single mother, a detail that adds layers to her character and the narrative. Her relationship with her daughter is portrayed with warmth and authenticity, providing a grounding element to the story. Dominic, or "Uncle Dom" as he is affectionately known to the protagonist's daughter, is more than just a love interest. He is a fully fleshed-out character whose actions and motivations are consistent and believable. His interactions with the protagonist's daughter are particularly endearing, showcasing his nurturing side and making him an ideal romantic hero.
The chemistry between the protagonist and Dominic is palpable from the outset. Ryan excels at creating tension and anticipation, making the reader root for the couple's eventual union. The dialogue is witty and filled with banter, adding a lightheartedness that balances the more serious themes of the novel. The slow burn of their relationship is executed with precision, allowing the reader to savor each moment of their evolving connection.
Ryan's writing style is both accessible and engaging, drawing the reader into the world she has created. The narrative is peppered with moments of humor that are both genuine and well-timed, providing levity without detracting from the emotional depth of the story. The absence of a third-act breakup is a refreshing departure from the typical romantic comedy formula, allowing the story to focus on the characters' growth and the strengthening of their relationship.
Themes of love, friendship, and self-discovery are woven throughout the novel, providing a rich tapestry that elevates the story beyond a simple romantic comedy. The protagonist's journey is one of self-awareness and acceptance, as she comes to terms with her feelings for Dominic and the implications of their relationship. The novel also explores the idea of family, both biological and chosen, and the importance of having a support system in place.
In comparison to other stories in the friends-to-lovers genre, Better Left Unsaid stands out for its nuanced portrayal of a single mother's romantic journey. While authors like Christina Lauren and Sally Thorne have also explored similar themes, Ryan's focus on the protagonist's dual roles as a mother and a romantic partner adds a unique dimension to the narrative. The inclusion of a child character who plays a significant role in the story is a refreshing change from the typical romantic comedy formula, adding depth and authenticity to the protagonist's character arc.
Overall, Better Left Unsaid is a charming and heartfelt novel that will resonate with readers who enjoy a well-crafted romantic comedy. Dani Ryan has created a story that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, with characters that are easy to love and root for. The novel's exploration of love, friendship, and the complexities of human relationships is both insightful and relatable, making it a must-read for fans of the genre.
In conclusion, Better Left Unsaid is a testament to the power of love and the importance of being honest with oneself and others. It is a story that reminds us that sometimes, the things we think are better left unsaid are the very things that need to be spoken aloud. Dani Ryan has crafted a novel that is sure to leave a lasting impression on readers, with its blend of humor, heart, and genuine emotion.
