All Jacked Up

Ransom
Within the family, we had no secrets. Our lives were intertwined, and the darkness that came with our way of life was something we all shared. Accepted. Had been born into. But for ten years, I’ve had one thing that was mine. Something I kept to myself. A source of light when things got heavy. The nerdy, overlooked tutor from high school who had been a breath of fresh air while helping me pass British Literature was someone I hadn’t let go of. Sure, it had been ten years since we’d seen each other, but that wasn’t important. Our texting was what I needed. Her wittiness had the ability to make me laugh and lighten my mood with her comebacks. She had never tried to impress me or flirt. It was the strongest relationship I’d ever had with a female, but it was also platonic, which was why it lasted. Noa Raines was my calm in the storms of life, and I wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize that.
Noa
When faced with a situation you weren’t expecting and have no idea how to navigate, one normally asks for advice from someone they trust. Typically, I’d text out my problem to my texting pen pal and ask him what to do. Except this time, my issue was with him. In the flesh, in front of me, glaring at me like he’d rather lick the bottom of his shoe than speak to me. I had no logical reason why he should dislike me on sight. He didn’t recognize me, that I knew. The name he’d been given was my pen name. One I had actually chosen because of him. Ironic that he’d made a snarky comment about it.
How was the man sitting across from me the same one I’d talked to almost daily for ten years? This man was cruel, rude, and although he was still mouthwatering, I didn’t like him. And he didn’t deserve to know who I was now. I’d walk out of here keeping that to myself. The next time he texted, he’d go unanswered. If he wanted to treat others so harshly, then I’d return the favor.

Abbi Glines' All Jacked Up is a compelling exploration of the complexities of human relationships, identity, and the often blurred lines between friendship and romance. The novel's central characters, Ransom and Noa, are intricately crafted, each bringing a unique perspective to the narrative that keeps readers engaged from start to finish.
The story unfolds through the dual perspectives of Ransom and Noa, a narrative choice that allows readers to delve deeply into the inner workings of both characters. Ransom, a man born into a life of darkness and secrets, finds solace in his decade-long, platonic relationship with Noa, a woman he knows only through text messages. This relationship is a beacon of light in his otherwise tumultuous life, providing him with laughter and a sense of normalcy. Glines does an exceptional job of portraying Ransom's internal struggles, highlighting his need for stability and the comfort he derives from his interactions with Noa.
Noa, on the other hand, is a character who embodies resilience and wit. Her interactions with Ransom are marked by her sharp comebacks and genuine personality, which endear her to him over the years. However, when faced with Ransom in person, she is confronted with a man who is starkly different from the one she has come to know through their digital exchanges. This encounter sets the stage for a narrative filled with tension, misunderstandings, and ultimately, self-discovery.
One of the novel's most compelling themes is the idea of identity and the masks people wear in different aspects of their lives. Ransom's dual existence—his public persona and his private self shared only with Noa—serves as a poignant reminder of the facades people maintain to protect themselves. Similarly, Noa's use of a pen name and her decision to keep her true identity hidden from Ransom underscore the complexities of self-representation and the fear of vulnerability.
Glines' exploration of these themes is both nuanced and relatable, inviting readers to reflect on their own experiences with identity and the roles they play in their relationships. The novel also delves into the concept of communication and the ways in which technology can both connect and divide us. The text-based relationship between Ransom and Noa is a testament to the power of words and the intimacy that can be forged through written communication. Yet, it also highlights the limitations of such interactions, as the absence of physical presence and non-verbal cues can lead to misunderstandings and misinterpretations.
Character development is a standout feature of All Jacked Up. Ransom and Noa are multi-dimensional characters who evolve significantly over the course of the novel. Ransom's journey from a man burdened by his past to someone willing to confront his fears and embrace vulnerability is both compelling and inspiring. Noa's transformation, too, is noteworthy, as she learns to assert herself and navigate the complexities of her feelings for Ransom.
Glines' writing is both engaging and evocative, with a keen attention to detail that brings the characters and their world to life. Her ability to capture the nuances of human emotion and the intricacies of relationships is evident throughout the novel, making it a deeply resonant read.
In comparison to other works in the romance genre, All Jacked Up stands out for its focus on the emotional and psychological aspects of its characters. While many romance novels prioritize physical attraction and romantic tension, Glines places a greater emphasis on the internal struggles and growth of her characters, resulting in a story that is both heartfelt and thought-provoking.
For readers who enjoy stories that delve into the complexities of human relationships and the journey of self-discovery, All Jacked Up is a must-read. Its blend of humor, emotion, and introspection makes it a standout in the genre, offering a fresh take on the themes of love, identity, and the power of connection.
Overall, Abbi Glines has crafted a novel that is both entertaining and meaningful, with characters that linger in the mind long after the final page is turned. All Jacked Up is a testament to the enduring power of friendship, the courage to confront one's fears, and the transformative nature of love.
