After You
by Erin Nicholas
Only one thing has not gone according to Kyle Ames’s grand life plan. Hannah McIntire. She was his first love, the woman he planned to marry, the one that got away—all that romantic crap.
Two years ago, Hannah broke his heart. Which has been, well, not exactly fine, but he’s handling it because he doesn’t have to see her every day. In fact, Kyle had planned to keep up with the not-seeing-Hannah thing for at least a couple more years. Or a couple more decades. Or forever. But now she’s back in town to help her grandmother, Kyle’s patient and one of his favorite people, recover from hip surgery.
It’s only for six weeks. Surely Hannah can survive living in her hometown and helping her grandmother for six short weeks. If she doesn’t leave the house more than necessary. And puts on a show of being the same girl everyone remembers. And absolutely avoids Kyle Ames.
But that strategy evaporates the moment she sees Kyle again. And then things get worse—way worse. Kyle plans to also put on a show. To make Hannah’s grandmother happy, he’ll pretend he’s completely forgiven Hannah and wants her back. He doesn’t. But he and Hannah are the only ones who know that. And the pretend seduction quickly starts feeling far too real…and Hannah’s having a hard time remembering that she’s supposed to be resisting the whole thing.
And then there’s the not-so-tiny complication of falling in love with Kyle all over again. And the fact that he’s falling for her too. And that they’re both realizing maybe this time they’re doing it right.

Erin Nicholas's After You is a compelling exploration of love, loss, and the intricate dance of second chances. The novel delves into the complexities of rekindling a past romance, set against the backdrop of a small town that holds both cherished memories and painful reminders for its protagonists. At its core, the book is a testament to the enduring power of love and the courage it takes to confront unresolved emotions.
The story centers around Kyle Ames and Hannah McIntire, two individuals whose lives were once intertwined in a seemingly perfect love story. However, as life often does, circumstances led them down separate paths, leaving behind a trail of heartbreak and unfulfilled dreams. Nicholas expertly crafts their reunion, weaving a narrative that is both heartwarming and heart-wrenching, as they navigate the complexities of their past and present emotions.
One of the standout aspects of After You is its character development. Kyle Ames is portrayed as a man who has meticulously planned his life, only to find that love is the one variable he cannot control. His journey from a heartbroken individual to someone willing to embrace vulnerability is both realistic and relatable. Nicholas does an excellent job of peeling back the layers of Kyle's character, revealing a depth that resonates with readers.
Hannah McIntire, on the other hand, is a character who embodies resilience and introspection. Her return to her hometown is not just a physical journey but an emotional one as well. The internal conflict she faces—between maintaining the facade of her past self and confronting her true feelings for Kyle—is portrayed with nuance and sensitivity. Nicholas captures Hannah's struggle with authenticity, making her a character that readers can empathize with and root for.
The chemistry between Kyle and Hannah is palpable from their very first encounter. Nicholas masterfully builds tension and anticipation, creating a dynamic that is both electric and tender. The evolution of their relationship—from a facade of forgiveness to genuine affection—is depicted with a keen understanding of human emotions. The author skillfully balances moments of humor, passion, and introspection, ensuring that the romance feels organic and deeply satisfying.
Beyond the central romance, After You explores themes of forgiveness, personal growth, and the importance of family. Hannah's relationship with her grandmother serves as a poignant subplot, highlighting the significance of familial bonds and the impact they have on personal decisions. The grandmother's recovery from hip surgery acts as a catalyst for Hannah's return, but it also symbolizes the healing process that both Hannah and Kyle must undergo.
Nicholas's writing style is engaging and accessible, with a knack for capturing the nuances of small-town life. The setting serves as more than just a backdrop; it is an integral part of the story, reflecting the characters' emotions and adding depth to their experiences. The author's attention to detail and vivid descriptions bring the town to life, making it a character in its own right.
In comparison to other contemporary romance novels, After You stands out for its emotional depth and character-driven narrative. While it shares similarities with works by authors like Nicholas Sparks and Jojo Moyes, Erin Nicholas infuses her story with a unique blend of humor and heart, creating a narrative that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.
One of the novel's strengths is its ability to balance lighthearted moments with more serious themes. The humor is well-timed and never feels forced, providing a refreshing contrast to the emotional intensity of the story. This balance ensures that the novel remains engaging throughout, appealing to a wide range of readers.
Overall, After You is a beautifully crafted tale of love and redemption. Erin Nicholas has created a story that is both timeless and timely, exploring the complexities of human relationships with grace and insight. The novel's themes of second chances and personal growth are universally relatable, making it a must-read for fans of contemporary romance.
For those seeking a story that is equal parts heartwarming and thought-provoking, After You delivers on all fronts. It is a testament to the power of love to heal old wounds and the courage it takes to embrace the unknown. Erin Nicholas has penned a novel that will linger in the hearts of readers long after the final page is turned.
