A Furever Home
Arthur
When I was squeezing seven rescue dogs and a horde of cats in my small house, all I wanted was to not turn away a pet in need. Opening the Safe Haven Pet Rescue was a dream come true. But when I get hurt, standing between a man with a gun and a stray dog, I realize I still can’t do it all.
My injured leg, a concussion, having to lean on my friends, and realizing how helpless I feel, throws me back to my childhood when nothing I did ever seemed to be enough. But there’s one silver lining. Brooklyn West. He’s the kind of guy who holds a stranger’s hand in a crisis. He’s great with my dogs, even cranky little Chili, and really seems to want to help the shelter. I like watching him be a protective big brother when his sister turns up on his doorstep, even though I think there’s pain underneath his sunny smiles. But as we move toward friendship, I keep looking for the strings, for the catch, and wondering how I’ll pay him back, because nothing in my life can be that sweet, or that simple.
Brooklyn
I went through a slice of medical hell, and came out the other side with enough money to move to the opposite side of the country and start the doggie daycare business of my dreams. The cherry on top of that good luck is meeting Arthur Bjornsson. Big, wild-bearded, soft-voiced Arthur is the kind of guy my family would’ve ridiculed. He’s warm-hearted and willing to throw himself into harm’s way right in front of my eyes to save one pathetic stray dog.
He’s the kind of guy who gives me back some faith in humanity. But when my underage sister Cheyenne shows up on my doorstep, on the run from the family I thought I’d escaped, my old life and new collide. I want to help Arthur, get to know him, and, as he heals, I want more than just friendship. But Cheyenne brings legal risks, a teen on the other side of my bedroom wall, and the threat of retribution from our family. The simple relationship I thought Arthur and I were building is suddenly messy as hell. I don’t know how we’ll get through this to reach the furever home I so desperately want.
A Furever Home is a fur-baby-filled, hurt-comfort, small town romance between two men whose only chance at a family is to build one themselves.

Kaje Harper's A Furever Home is a heartwarming and emotionally resonant novel that delves into themes of healing, trust, and the creation of chosen families. Set against the backdrop of a small-town pet rescue, the story weaves together the lives of two men, Arthur and Brooklyn, who are both seeking solace and connection in a world that has often been unkind to them.
At the heart of the novel is Arthur, a compassionate and dedicated animal rescuer whose life revolves around his Safe Haven Pet Rescue. Harper paints Arthur as a deeply empathetic character, whose love for animals is palpable and infectious. His journey is one of resilience, as he grapples with the physical and emotional scars from his past. The incident that leaves him injured—a selfless act of bravery to protect a stray dog—serves as a catalyst for his personal growth. Arthur's struggle with vulnerability and his reluctance to accept help are portrayed with nuance, making his character arc both relatable and inspiring.
Brooklyn, on the other hand, is a character who has faced his own share of challenges. Having survived a traumatic medical ordeal, he relocates to start anew, with dreams of opening a doggie daycare. His encounter with Arthur is serendipitous, and their burgeoning friendship is depicted with a tender authenticity. Brooklyn's character is a study in contrasts; his sunny disposition masks a deeper pain, and his protective nature towards his sister Cheyenne adds layers to his personality. Harper skillfully explores Brooklyn's internal conflict as he navigates the complexities of his past and present, striving to build a future that includes Arthur.
The relationship between Arthur and Brooklyn is the emotional core of the novel. Harper excels in crafting a romance that is both sweet and realistic, avoiding clichés while embracing the genuine connection between the two men. Their interactions are imbued with warmth and humor, and the gradual development of their bond is a testament to Harper's ability to write authentic, character-driven romance. The chemistry between Arthur and Brooklyn is palpable, and their journey from friendship to something deeper is both satisfying and heartening.
One of the standout aspects of A Furever Home is its exploration of the theme of chosen family. Both Arthur and Brooklyn have experienced familial rejection and trauma, and their journey towards creating a supportive and loving family unit is both poignant and uplifting. The inclusion of Brooklyn's sister, Cheyenne, adds depth to this theme, as her presence brings both challenges and opportunities for growth. Harper handles the complexities of family dynamics with sensitivity, highlighting the importance of love, acceptance, and understanding in building a family that transcends blood ties.
Harper's writing is both evocative and accessible, drawing readers into the small-town setting with vivid descriptions and a keen attention to detail. The portrayal of the pet rescue is particularly well-done, with the animals serving as both a source of comfort and a metaphor for the characters' own journeys towards healing. The novel's pacing is well-balanced, allowing for moments of introspection and character development while maintaining a sense of momentum that keeps readers engaged.
In comparison to other works in the genre, A Furever Home stands out for its emphasis on emotional depth and character-driven storytelling. While many romance novels focus primarily on the romantic relationship, Harper's novel delves into the broader themes of healing and self-discovery, offering a more holistic and satisfying reading experience. Fans of authors like TJ Klune and Roan Parrish, who also explore themes of found family and personal growth, will find much to appreciate in Harper's work.
Overall, A Furever Home is a beautifully crafted novel that resonates on multiple levels. It is a story about love in its many forms—romantic, familial, and platonic—and the power of connection to heal and transform. Harper's characters are richly drawn and deeply human, and their journey towards building a "furever" home is both moving and inspiring. For readers seeking a romance that is both heartwarming and thought-provoking, A Furever Home is a must-read.
