A Family Affair: The Plan
by Mary Campisi
Real families aren’t always the ones you know about…
Sam Harrington had always believed committing to a detailed plan would guarantee success in his career and in his personal life. In fact, he was certain of it as he worked his plan and became a well-respected veterinarian, and one of the city’s most eligible bachelors. Life was good. He had a career he loved, respect, friends, and his family. Until he chose the wrong woman and his carefully constructed plan crushed him.
Now he’s back in Magdalena, the place he once called home, trying to repair the relationship with his family and find a way out of the mess his life has become. What he doesn’t need is an outsider in town, especially one who oozes class and attitude.
Hope Newland moves through life according to a plan her mother devised when Hope was a child, one that does not include a meager upbringing, lack of a father, or a small-town background. When her company decides to expand into the bed-and-breakfast market, Hope is sent to Magdalena, NY, a town that has a reputation for attracting repeat visitors as well as future residents. Hope’s job will be to observe, interview, and figure out why this town and its bed-and-breakfast are so special.
Hope soon realizes Magdalena and the people in it might just be different, and that includes Sam Harrington. He makes her uncomfortable with his pointed stares, and blunt questions, as though he knows she’s not as confident or high-class as she pretends… and that makes him dangerous.
Sam’s also in “dangerous” territory because he trusted the wrong woman before. Still, there’s something about Hope Newland that draws him to her…makes him wonder if she’s part of a bigger plan…one he can’t control?

Mary Campisi’s A Family Affair: The Plan is a compelling exploration of the intricate dynamics of family, love, and personal growth. Set against the backdrop of the quaint town of Magdalena, NY, this novel delves into the lives of two protagonists, Sam Harrington and Hope Newland, whose paths cross in unexpected ways, challenging their preconceived notions about life and themselves.
At the heart of the story is Sam Harrington, a well-respected veterinarian whose life has been meticulously planned out. Sam’s character is a fascinating study of how rigid adherence to a plan can sometimes lead to unforeseen consequences. His journey back to Magdalena is not just a physical return to his roots but also a metaphorical journey towards self-discovery and healing. Campisi skillfully portrays Sam’s internal struggle as he grapples with the fallout of trusting the wrong woman, which serves as a catalyst for his character development. The author’s ability to depict Sam’s vulnerability and resilience is commendable, making him a relatable and sympathetic character.
Hope Newland, on the other hand, is a character driven by a plan not of her own making but one devised by her mother. Her arrival in Magdalena is initially a professional endeavor, tasked with understanding the unique charm of the town’s bed-and-breakfast scene. However, as the story unfolds, Hope’s character is revealed to be much more complex. Her facade of confidence and sophistication is gradually peeled away, exposing her insecurities and the pressure of living up to her mother’s expectations. Campisi’s portrayal of Hope is nuanced, capturing the essence of a woman torn between duty and desire, between the life she’s been told to lead and the life she yearns for.
The chemistry between Sam and Hope is palpable from their first encounter. Campisi excels in crafting a slow-burning romance that feels authentic and deeply rooted in the characters’ personal growth. Their interactions are charged with tension and vulnerability, as both characters are forced to confront their fears and insecurities. The author’s deft handling of their evolving relationship is a testament to her understanding of human emotions and the complexities of love.
One of the novel’s standout themes is the idea that real families aren’t always the ones you know about. This theme is intricately woven into the narrative, challenging the traditional notions of family and belonging. Through Sam’s attempts to mend his fractured relationship with his family and Hope’s quest for identity, Campisi explores the idea that family is not just about blood ties but also about the connections we forge with others. The town of Magdalena itself becomes a character in the story, representing a place of healing and acceptance, where people can find a sense of belonging.
Campisi’s writing is both evocative and engaging, drawing readers into the world of Magdalena with vivid descriptions and a keen eye for detail. The small-town setting is brought to life through the author’s rich portrayal of its inhabitants, each with their own stories and secrets. This adds depth to the narrative, creating a tapestry of interconnected lives that enhances the overall impact of the story.
In comparison to other works in the romance and family drama genres, A Family Affair: The Plan stands out for its focus on character development and emotional depth. While it shares thematic similarities with novels by authors like Nicholas Sparks and Debbie Macomber, Campisi’s work is distinguished by its introspective approach and the emphasis on personal growth. The novel’s exploration of themes such as trust, forgiveness, and the search for identity resonates with readers, offering a poignant reflection on the human condition.
Overall, A Family Affair: The Plan is a beautifully crafted novel that captivates with its rich character development and exploration of universal themes. Mary Campisi has created a story that is both heartwarming and thought-provoking, inviting readers to reflect on their own lives and the plans they make. It is a testament to the power of love and the resilience of the human spirit, making it a must-read for anyone who enjoys a story that touches the heart and soul.
