Summary
A Christmas Maker
by M.K. Kerrick
First comes love.
Then comes marriage.
Then comes a blackmail scheme I can't escape from.
A long, long time ago I made a mistake marrying Thorin Ravenscroft in a whirlwind romance in Las Vegas. It was a short lived disaster, ending in a divorce and my name being marred in red for all of New York to see. But I picked up the shattered pieces of my soul, dusted the grime of the city off my hands and knees, and made something of myself as the well known Princess of Philanthropy.
But secrets have a hard time staying buried when your name is splashed across every news network in the country. Unfortunately for Thorin, a salacious story about his supposed drug abuse found out at his birthday party is making the rounds, destroying his name and his business in one fell swoop.
Enter King Huntington-Ward and Aillard Brookwell, claiming to be Thorin's knights in shining armor, ready to defend him at all costs. Even if that cost is me. Suddenly I'm thrust back into the world I was exiled from, supposed to reform the image the media is creating around Thorin.
But sometimes time doesn't heal all wounds. And right now, when we're playing the game of pretend for the media's sake, I wonder if I'll ever heal at all. And the lines begin to blur around what's real and what's fake.
I might just be another blip of a memory for Thorin Ravenscroft, but his name will forever be scarred into my soul.

A Christmas Maker by M.K. Kerrick is a captivating exploration of love, redemption, and the complexities of human relationships, all set against the backdrop of the holiday season. The narrative centers around the protagonist, who finds herself entangled in a web of past mistakes and present dilemmas, particularly revolving around her tumultuous relationship with her ex-husband, Thorin Ravenscroft. The blurb sets the stage for a story filled with emotional depth and the struggle for personal growth amidst external pressures, making it a compelling read for those who enjoy contemporary romance with a twist of drama.
Thematically, the book delves into the idea of second chances and the impact of public perception on personal identity. The protagonist’s journey from a scandal-ridden past to becoming a respected figure in philanthropy illustrates the resilience of the human spirit. Kerrick skillfully portrays the protagonist's internal conflict as she grapples with her feelings for Thorin while trying to navigate the media storm surrounding him. This duality of love and resentment is a recurring theme that resonates throughout the narrative, making it relatable for anyone who has faced the complexities of past relationships.
Character development is one of the standout features of A Christmas Maker. The protagonist is not merely a passive character; she evolves significantly throughout the story. Initially, she is portrayed as a woman haunted by her past, struggling to reclaim her identity after a public divorce that left her reputation tarnished. As the plot unfolds, readers witness her transformation into a strong, independent woman who is willing to confront her past for the sake of her future. This growth is beautifully illustrated through her interactions with Thorin and the two new characters, King Huntington-Ward and Aillard Brookwell, who serve as catalysts for her journey.
Thorin Ravenscroft, on the other hand, is a complex character whose flaws make him both infuriating and endearing. His struggles with public scrutiny and personal demons add layers to his character, making him more than just a love interest. The tension between him and the protagonist is palpable, filled with unresolved feelings and the weight of their shared history. Kerrick does an excellent job of balancing the romantic tension with the emotional stakes, ensuring that readers are invested in their journey towards reconciliation.
The introduction of King and Aillard adds an intriguing dynamic to the story. They represent the external pressures that the protagonist faces, as well as the societal expectations surrounding relationships and reputations. Their roles as "knights in shining armor" are not just about saving Thorin; they also challenge the protagonist to confront her own feelings and the reality of her situation. This interplay between the characters enriches the narrative, providing a multi-faceted view of love and loyalty.
Moreover, the setting of the story during the holiday season adds a layer of warmth and nostalgia that enhances the overall reading experience. The festive backdrop serves as a contrast to the emotional turmoil the characters face, highlighting the theme of hope and renewal. Kerrick’s descriptive prose brings the holiday spirit to life, making readers feel the joy and chaos that often accompany this time of year. This setting not only serves as a backdrop but also acts as a character in its own right, influencing the decisions and emotions of the protagonists.
One of the most impactful aspects of A Christmas Maker is its exploration of the media's role in shaping public perception. The protagonist’s struggle to navigate the treacherous waters of fame and scandal is a poignant reminder of how quickly reputations can be tarnished. Kerrick adeptly critiques the sensationalism of the media, showcasing its effects on personal lives and relationships. This theme is particularly relevant in today’s digital age, where social media can amplify rumors and distort reality, making the story resonate even more with contemporary readers.
In comparison to other contemporary romances, A Christmas Maker stands out for its emotional depth and character-driven narrative. While many romance novels focus solely on the romantic aspect, Kerrick weaves in themes of personal growth, societal expectations, and the complexity of human emotions. Readers who enjoyed works like The Hating Game by Sally Thorne or Beach Read by Emily Henry will find similar enjoyment in Kerrick’s storytelling, as both authors excel in creating relatable characters and intricate relationships.
Overall, A Christmas Maker is a beautifully crafted tale that captures the essence of love, forgiveness, and the pursuit of happiness. M.K. Kerrick’s ability to blend romance with deeper themes of redemption and personal growth makes this book a must-read for fans of the genre. The emotional journey of the protagonist, coupled with the engaging plot and well-developed characters, ensures that readers will be left contemplating the complexities of love long after they turn the last page. This book is not just a holiday romance; it is a heartfelt reminder that sometimes, the most challenging paths lead to the most rewarding destinations.
